Why would you even entertain such a boneheaded idea? If such a thing were ever to occur I would promptly conclude that nuclear weapons were a titanic hoax concocted by the league of nations group in a bid for world peace.
Harsh. I entertain it because I see it like 2 people at a park. They get into a fight, beat each other up, or whatever. They don't take TNT back to the others house and blow that shit up, ya know?
Two people at a park playing with switchblades, open carrying rifles and otherwise armed to the teeth while their group of belligerent, and also heavily armed friends looks on? The reason for conflict doesn't dictate method of conflict, the fact that one is in a fight is the reason one keeps fighting. The only reason I'm harsh is that I keep seeing this notion of conventional war between nuclear power pop up, and it's outrageously dangerous.
I don't devalue your input because of the harshness, the direct attack was perhaps uncalled for though. I did, in my OP specifically mention that I believe "any direct conflict means push the red button." I asked for other opinions because there is a part of me that feels like it should be possible to have a military conflict without it going nuclear. I am ultimately hoping someone has a different viewpoint with a good reason for why it could be possible.
Preface:
This is a theoretical question, not one associated with any current events.
Question:
Is it possible for the US and Russia to fight in a country like Iran without the use of nuclear weapons or proxies? How?
My Answer:
I'm uncertain of where to go. On one hand it feels like it could be possible, but my concern is that it would be just too enticing to attack production/manufacturing in the US/Russia via airplane to contain the combat. Further, I assume each country knows this, so direct fighting in a 3rd parties country is avoided because it would lead to direct confrontation.
There's also further issue for Russia in that the US's ability to project power is unrivaled. They would be hard pressed to put boots on the ground anywhere but Alaska.
Russia knowing this I think means any direct conflict means push the red button.
Extra Credit Question:
If at some point a country gets the ability to prevent MAD, do they use it to conquer the world?
