Cornell University president Elizabeth Garrett died of cancer Sunday evening after less than a year of leading the school. She was 52.
The Ivy League school said Garrett died at home after 'a brave battle with colon cancer.'
Garrett became the first female president of Cornell on July 1.
Board of trustees Chairman Robert Harrison said that while Garrett's tenure was tragically cut short, her efforts have set the university on a path toward continued excellence.
Garrett announced that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer less than a month before she passed away.
'I am receiving the best possible care from a team of doctors at Weill Cornell Medicine and am beginning an aggressive treatment program,' she wrote in a statement on February 8.
'I am truly grateful to all the wonderful friends and colleagues who are helping me out through this difficult process.'
