Tune in and listen. Started with a small crawling brush fire earlier. [link to www.broadcastify.com]
Wildfire prompts evacuations on eastern Iron Range By Andrew Krueger Today at 8:08 p.m.
A wildfire prompted evacuations on the eastern Iron Range on Friday night as warm, dry weather created dangerous fire conditions across the region.
The U.S. Forest Service reported that the fire burning in the Skibo area, about six miles southeast of Hoyt Lakes, had forced the evacuation of six to eight seasonal cabins.
The Northland Village assisted living facility on the eastern side of Hoyt Lakes also was being evacuated as a precaution, authorities said, with residents being moved to the Aurora Community Center.
“For precautionary reasons they’ve evacuated some homes out in that area (Skibo), and they’ve also evacuated the assisted-living home right on the edge of town,” said Hoyt Lakes City Councilor David Zins.
Winds were gusty out of the northwest on Friday night — which would bode well for Hoyt Lakes, pushing the flames in the opposite direction. But there were some concerns that “the wind (may) change later this evening, and because (the fire) isn’t under control, they don’t want to take a chance” with the residents of Northland Village, Zins said.
