Sunday marks the fifteenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
There will be the standard back-to-back procession of news stories, tributes to the fallen, acclaim for brave firefighters and police, and a special documentary produced by CNN for “Americans who have no firsthand memories of the Sept. 11, 2001” attack.
As usual, uncomfortable facts will be ignored as an overly sentimental panegyric cavalcade of imagery and oratory unfolds on television screens.
Let’s consider a few specific details that do not fit in the establishment media’s coverage.
George W. Bush, lauded as the hero that confronted al-Qaeda, was connected to the supposed perpetrator, Osama bin Laden, the Saudi he promised to hunt down in Wild West, dead-or-alive fashion. The connection was through BCCI, the CIA’s Bank of Credit and Commerce International. The offshore operation was used to fund Osama when he was on the side of the US in Afghanistan. “The CIA used BCCI Islamabad and other branches in Pakistan to funnel some of the two billion dollars that Washington sent to Osama bin Laden's Mujahadeen to help fight the Soviets in Afghanistan,” writes investigative journalist Lucy Komisar. The Bushes' private links to the bank passed to Saudi banker Bin Mahfouz, Osama's brother in law, through Texas businessman James R. Bath, who invested money in the United States on behalf of the Saudi. Bath financed Bush’s Arbusto Energy Inc. in the late 70s and early 1980s.
The former New Jersey governor Thomas Kean, selected by Bush to lead the 9/11 commission, also had a connection to Bin Mahfouz. Kean was a director and shareholder of Amerada Hess Corporation, an energy company involved in the Hess-Delta joint venture with Delta Oil of Saudi Arabia, an interest owned by the bin Mahfouz clan. Kean didn’t worry much about his proximity to a wanted terrorist, however. The corporate media had his back. According to the Baltimore Sun, Kean lacked “obvious conflicts of interest” and the connection to the relative of Osama bin Laden was ignored by the media.
