Original Message This is local news here, but it's keeping a low profile.
The story keeps changing.

Basics:

The deputy director of Maryland's DHS shot 2 Marlo Furniture deliverymen.

The deliverymen had no weapons, they were trying to deliver the man's furniture.

Both deliverymen were shot 3 times each -- in the chest at close range -- with a 9mm Beretta.

Last night the networks interrupted programming to tell us that one man had died while in surgery, and the other was nearly dead.

Amazingly, the DEAD man seems to have recovered overnight.

It's a butt-covering work in progress.

Pr. George's Official Shot 2, Authorities Say

A Prince George's County police officer who is also the county's No. 2 Homeland Security official shot and critically wounded two furniture deliverymen during an altercation in the officer's Accokeek home last night, authorities said.

A man identified by law enforcement sources as Cpl. Keith Washington fired his service weapon at the men, who police said had arrived at his home to deliver furniture. Washington has also worked as County Executive Jack B. Johnson's driver.

Johnson appointed Washington as the county's Deputy Homeland Security Director in 2004

Cpl. Stephen Pacheco, a police spokesman, declined to confirm Washington's identification last night, saying department policy prohibits an officer's name from being released for 24 hours in such circumstances.

The reason for the altercation remained unclear this afternoon. The incident happened about 7:45 p.m., authorities said, when the men entered Washington's house in the 1500 block of Shellford Lane, an upscale neighborhood in the southern part of the county.

Police said the officer told investigators that one deliveryman began to assault him, and the second deliveryman joined in.

The officer then shot each in man in the upper body with his department-issued 9mm Beretta, police said. Police said their description of the incident was based on the account provided by the officer and a member of his family who witnessed the dispute.

The deliverymen, ages 22 and 36, were flown by helicopter to Prince George's Hospital Center. Earlier reports that one of the men had died proved false. Both were reported in critical but stable condition this morning.

A Prince George's police source who was on the scene of the shootings said last night that Washington had not been charged with any criminal offenses.

Reached last night by telephone, Johnson issued a statement saying: "This is a criminal investigation. I can't talk about it."

The president of Rockville-based Marlo Furniture Corp, Neal Glickfield, said this morning that he was still gathering information about the incident, and did not yet have a clear picture of what happened.

Washington, whom Johnson appointed the county's deputy homeland security director in 2004, was injured in the scuffle but was not shot, police said. He was treated for minor injuries at a hospital. Police Lt. April

Assault charges are pending against the two deliverymen. Neither of those men were armed.

Pacheco said the officer involved in the shooting would be placed on paid administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

Police cordoned off the area around Washington's two-story house last night as investigators from the special response team and internal affairs arrived. A Marlo truck was parked outside. Several high-ranking police officials, including deputy chief Roberto Hylton, were also on the scene, along with at least one official from the county executive's office.

"I just know he was involved in a shooting inside of his home," Vernon Herron, director of the county's Homeland Security department, said of Washington.

A source familiar with the investigation who declined to be identified said Washington's wife was just outside the house when the shooting occurred. Another source said that at least one child was in the home.

Herron, who is Washington's boss, said that Washington is responsible for day-to-day operations of the county's Homeland Security agency.

Washington, a 16-year police veteran, is one of two county police officers detailed to the agency. The appointment allows Washington to remain on the police payroll while serving in the Homeland Security post.

Washington ran for County Council last year, losing to incumbent Marilyn Bland (D).

In January 2004, Washington was charged with a misdemeanor on suspicion of attacking a property manager at a meeting he attended as a board member of a homeowners association in Accokeek.

Washington was suspended with pay pending an investigation, and the charge was later dropped.

Washington also has been the subject of scrutiny for an on-duty incident in November 1997. Washington and several corrections officers were accused in a civil suit of violating the rights of an Adelphi man who was arrested and strip-searched after protesting the way Washington treated another motorist.

A jury in May 2000 found for the plaintiff, but the case was later appealed at a new trial -- Washington prevailed and was not charged.

According to the county's Web site, Washington has an extensive military and law enforcement background. He served five years in the Army and 19 in the reserves, where he received training in homeland security. He worked as a detective in Hyattsville before joining county executive Johnson's security detail.

Before it's over, this aggressive DHS sociopath --who already has a history of attacking people-- will become the victim and the deliverymen will be the bad guys.

Tell me, if you were shot 3 times in the upper chest with a 9mm Beretta from less than 2 feet away... just how messed up would you be?
