It's a post-nostalgic, uber-kitsch, ironic world now. Devoid of tradition, meaning or attachment.
so true.
But the very definition of culture is dictated by the collective, those in your community, country, social group. Multiculturalism and technology has killed culture. We can all just have our own little experiences. It's why the Super Bowl is now our big national thing. It's THE ONLY time we all stop and mostly do the same thing. In groups. At the exact same time. Next up, the running man or hunger games.
And the Super Bowl is nothing but commercialism, kitsch and irony. And the "tradition" is utterly superficial. Meaningless, mindless consumerism.
I don't even really know of anyone who even watches the Super Bowl any more. The last time there was anything good at halftime was when The Who played. That's been a few years.
Think about Christmas....ugly sweaters are a thing now, sold in kits or available at Target or Party City. No sweet little Grandmas or Moms in the mix, sewing with love or sentiment.
TV stations play the same once-beloved movie for 24 hours, totally killing any specialness or "once a year" feeling, the repetition turns the sentiment into snark or irony.
Several stations even have a Yule Log playing on the TV for hours on end. Or you can get it anytime on your computer for the fake warm fuzzy feeling.
Presents have been replaced by gift cards, frought with obligation and expectation instead of generosity or surprise.
Christmas trees are fake. Or miniature. With tiny little or ornaments that reflect or personalities or lifestyle instead of the Spirit of the season.
So last Christmas? That was a decade or more ago.
We are post-cultural at this point. No shared values or traditions. All just having our own little special snowflake experiences. No depth, no feeling. Just checking off the boxes on the calendar.
