Original Message Hi my GLP Family.

I am asking for your prayers and good thoughts and vibrations for my 4 year old daughter Filicia who is going through a major heart surgery as I type this.

Please help in prayer for her and her surgical team for a positive outcome.

Love to all of you.

hf

Update 1:
She has been in surgery for about 1.5 hours. Just got a update from the surgical nurse that although she has a small fever (100.5), they are going to cool her down and proceed. Thank you for all the prayers.

Update 2:
She has been in now for 2.5 hours. They are now opening the chest. This is taking time due to scar tissue from previous surgical attempt to fix the problem. Vitals all good.

Update 3:
Ok. They have gotten past the scar tissue and are at the heart. They are now placing a Doppler camera. Next they will attempt to repair a device that was placed yesterday during a catherization procedure that moved unexpectedly out of place. They will attempt to secure it. If this fails they will attempt a preplanded Plan 'B' fix.
Thanks for all the prayers as we begin the more critical stages of the procedure.

Update 4:
Surgical Nurse just called again. The team is still attempting the plan A fix which is to secure the device that was placed yesterday. I sure hope they can do this. We are 7 hours in so far.

Update 5:
Ok. Deep breath. Nurse just called. All attempts to get the device (plug) to work from outside the heart have failed. They have now put Filicia on bypass and have stopped the heart. They are now trying to solve the problem with the device from inside the heart. This is getting scary. Her stats/vitals are still good.

Update 6:
Sigh of relief. They have solved the device/patch problem and have restarted the heart. So glad to hear that. Whew.. They are now working on some pacemaker issues they discovered, but they hope to be finishing up in the next few hours.
Thanks again to all the GLP'rs who sent their prayers and good vibes.

Update 7:
Surgical Nurse just called. They have added another surgeon and are still tackling the pacemaker issue. They are also seeing some leakage in the device/patch and are discussing options. Filicia is still on bypass. Nurse says She is strong and vitals are good.

Update 8:
So they are finishing up. They got the pacemaker issues all fixed. Sadly they were not able to fix the hole/patch completely. There is still a leak, but they feel its manageable for now. Filicia will be getting off bypass shortly and then will need to remain in surgery for 3 or so hours to monitor bleeding and what not. The surgeon is supposed to explain the details to us in an hour or so.
More to come.

Update 9:
Last Update for tonight.
Just talked to the Surgeon. They got her all fixed up. They replaced the pacemaker, fixed the hole/patch and repaired a valve. Surgeon says she will not need any more Surgery. Years from now we may need to replace pacemaker battery or she will grow out of the need for it.

All of you at GLP helped guide the hands of the Dr's and your prayers were answered.
I am just so grateful to all of you, the wonderful staff here at Vanderbilt Children's, and the Lord himself for the blessings we received today and to be a first-hand witness to a miracle.

Love to all of you.

Update 10
They just woke us up 3:07am central. Filicia is having blood pressure problems. The Chief Surgeon is going to open her chest again to try and fix the problem.
Please pray again for her. Wife and I are hurting, scared, but holding on.

Update 11
The Surgeon's got her opened and used suction to remove fluids that had built up around the heart causing low blood pressure. They placed a tube there and closed her back up.
They say she is improving now and she might be waking up some time tonight or tomorrow.

Update 12
We are with her now full time. All her stats are good and improving.

Here is a pic so you can put a face to the name:

Filicia 1

There is a great energy in her room right now. Very strong and the staff seems energized also. Feels like the hair on my arms want to stand up.

She moving her hands and toes from time to time.

All good. We just want to thank you all so much for you kind words, prayers and positive energy.

Update 13

Everything is still good or improving. We know she can hear us as I told her we were going to get ice cream and her face just kinda lit up.
They tell us we still have a day or so before they can remove the breathing tube and all the IV,s.

You all can send her a card here, it's free.

Just put in "Filicia" as the name and room number "5310" . The hospital will print the card out and delver to her room. What a neat service.

Update 14
Good morning all. We finally got a good night's sleep and little Filicia did real well. We are seeing a lot of the swelling go down and they have started cutting back on meds. Her color looks so much better this am. We hope that her breathing tube will be out later today. So far its looking to be a great new year.
Thank you all for the continued support, prayers and ecards. I expect come Monday there we be a big stack for her to look at.

Update 15
Happy New Year Everyone!!
The nurses woke us up at 2am to let us know that little Filicia is doing so well that they are removing the breathing tube. Yay.. shortly after she woke up and wiggled around and asked for mom and dad. We were right there and just so happy to see her eyes open and awake. She still has lots of tubes in her but she is doing really well now.
What a great new year gift.

Update 16
Good morning all.
Today we seem to be going backwards a bit. Her swelling has returned and she has a bad cough. She also looks real flush and her energy is much lower than yesterday. They are treating the lung/ cough now. We hope it helps.
Our prayers continue.

Update 17
The latter half of yesterday she ended up getting a fever, but fortunately it only lasted a few hours. She did wake up for part of the day and fought hard to get a drink of water or juice. Sadly the docs won't let her have anything due to meds she currently on.

Today she is looking very weak, and thin. Her swelling has gone. Her stats are improving. We know the patch in her heart is holding, and the valve they repaired is also holding up well. She still has too much fluids in the lungs and around the heart. They are dealing with that. Overall the docs feel she is on the right course, just taking a little longer then they thought. They estimate we will remain in PCICU for another 4 or 5 days.

We thank the Lord and all of you for your prayers and support.
Filicia got 79 cards today from you all.

Update 18

Hi GLP. Great improvements today. She is looking much better. They are begining the process of removing lines and have taken out one of her drain tubes. Looks like she will be able to eat and drink today, something she has been asking for. Her spirits are much better. She agreed to let me take a pic of her with the fluffy dog she got from a GLP'r. They are telling us too that they will be moving us from PCICU to a regular recovery room later today if all goes well. The next big hurtle will be to get some weight on her. Her last Surgery and this one have left her so thin we can see her bones and ribs.

Thank you all for your prayers, kind thoughts and gifts.

Love you all.

Update 19

She is doing much better today. She got a vanella shake and some mash potatoes today. She has been sitting up and coloring her book. They have removed all but her oxygen canola and 1 IV in her leg. She still has a feeding tube.
They are going to move us to regular recovery room today and they tell us they expect us to be able to go home in 3 or 4 days.

We are so happy and thankful she is recovering so well and so quickly. Even the docs are a bit surprised.

Prayers and faith work.

Update 20

She continues to improve. The last 3posting kiddie porn on twitter feeds or so was a roller coaster ride though with a high fever and big tremers. She also had a strong consistent cough that did not seem to want to stop. They did every test they had and found nothing wrong.
Then today she is fine. No fever, very little coughing, tremmers are gone. What a wired thing.
She got her feeding tube out today too.
She is looking and feeling so much better. We went for a wagon ride through the hospital and she got to paint some pictures and play with her little Dr. Kit. She was treating all her stuffed animals.
Looks like we may be on our way home in a few more days.

Update 21 (Finial Update for this Thread)

Greetings to all of you.
I greatly apologize for such a delay in this update.

Filicia is doing marvelously now. We checked out of the hospital on the 18th of Jan. She was doing well but still was weak and having issues with fluid build up in her belly which in turn caused us to go home with a oxygen tank, she needed at night.
On the 23rd we had to race back to the hospital as her meds were not working to reduce fluid and she was bloating up, thus causing her lungs to be restricted. After 5 more days in the hospital we got it under control and were able to go home again.

As of this writing, she is doing really well, miraculously well. She is gaining weight again, she is full of energy and just being a normal kid. She is making different play-dough sculptures as I type this. Later her and I will go out and play on the swings.

We are so grateful to all of you. I am convinced that while the medical care at Vanderbilt Children's was top notch, the prayers and positive thoughts/vibes sent in her direction + the faith in the good lord is what really made her whole again.

She cherishes all the cards that were sent. The stuffed dog is still with her. I will be so excited to tell her about the folks here at GLP when she is older, strangers to her, that gave her so much.

Many Many Thanks and blessings to All of You.
