SO.... I've been chatting with this kid, via an "organic farming" website ... for six years now - who lives in Sweden because he and I have the same interest and he has so much practical experience - using old tried and true methods, passed down from his family - that have all but been forgotten here in the US ... even though he is in his early twenties, and I could be his grandmother - his advice was always spot on, and I really appreciate his insights
a couple of years back, I invited him to come to the US, to help me with a few big projects I wanted to get started on my farm... I offered to trade him Room and Board, for work, and to pay him, for any work he did, over and above those expenses ... even offered to fly him back and forth because it was cheaper than hiring local kids, who had no work ethic - and were not dependable, and did a shitty job, WITH supervision - even though I paid them ten bucks an hour ... but he turn me down - twice
fast forward three years, his parent sold their farm and he was struggling to find work, because farms are state regulated, and few and far between in the EU ... and he hated "city life" but somehow he had managed to save enough money, to buy his own ticket to the States, and was willing to come here and work for me for the three months he was allowed to stay for a "visit" (which requires no Visa) ... so I said SURE - I'll pick you up at the airport
but when I got there (yesterday) Customs wouldn't let him enter ... they ASSUMED that he was just going to stay ... I talked to the Customs agent and pointed out that he had a return ticket and was only going to stay for three months - because even if he loved America, we both knew, that he would have to go home, and get a "work Visa" to stay longer ... I told the Agent that it took him years to earn his way here, and we weren't doing anything illegal. The fact that he didn't have/declare the kind of money tourist usually have, was because I was going to pay him to help me out ... I even told him to travel "light" because we planned on shopping at Goodwill, for the clothes he needed that could be tossed when he left
- which was why all he had in his back pack was his favorite farm boots, gloves, hat and his laptop - a few odds and ends but nothing "threatening"
they wouldn't even let me meet with him ... they told me to go home. I have no idea what they did with him after that, because I haven't heard from him since then ... and I don't blame him ... all that money - four hours to the Airport - 12 hours on a plane - and he was sent back because some Custom's agent determined he was a potential "illegal alien"
since when do the Custom official screen VISITORS like that ? After talking to some other "officials" at the airport, I was told that they are getting a flood of Swedish "visitors" lately and that many of them were (especially millineals) staying beyond the 3months allowed- and just disappearing into society ... taking "American jobs" - and that since Trump was elected, they were being turned back - esp the ones who planned on "visiting" for the three full months they are allowed (without a visa)or coming without a return flight home - the fact that, after questioning, it was revealed that we were not related and met "on-line" raised red flags. The fact that I had known him for six years and that we talked on a regular basis almost daily and I trusted him enough to allow him into my home - he was white and not a muslim and had no police record and spoke and wrote English better than me - was ignored
