I plan on driving during the day and staying in places like Monterey, Veracruz, Tampico, Mexico City, Lago de Chapala, Pacific coast. I'll be driving a fairly nice Toyota Tundra. Should I be concerned? Why is Mexico off limits? Any Mexicans have any tips? I speak a little Spanish and love Hispanic culture. Should I not venture south of the border?
We went in January. Our guide told us the problems dont start until you get to the northern states of the country. I would be on the look out for street vendors trying to rip you off more than anything else. The 4 hour drive from D.F to Acapulco was beautiful and worth the trip. All in all, shitheads there give off the same vibes, avoid overly friendly "strangers" and you should be fine.
