From that pic you can tell the McCain was dead in the water. There is no shear damage from a ship under power. It was a direct hit ! The McCain would have been under full power to get out of the way of a ship that was 4 times it's size. It was also full daylight as far as I know. No shear no power. Look at where the "V" shaped part of the haul hit the war ship. Not one inch of shear.
