A large majority of Americans across the political spectrum believe that Washington D.C. is controlled by a Deep State of unelected government bureaucrats, according to a new poll.
A Monmouth University Poll found 60% of those surveyed feel that unelected or appointed government officials wield too much power in determining federal policy.
“We usually expect opinions on the operation of government to shift depending on which party is in charge,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.
“But there’s an ominous feeling by Democrats and Republicans alike that a ‘Deep State’ of unelected operatives are pulling the levers of power.”
The term “Deep State” itself isn’t familiar to most people (63%).
“However, when the term is described as a group of unelected government and military officials who secretly manipulate or direct national policy, nearly 3-in-4 (74%) say they believe this type of apparatus exists in Washington,” the report said.
The poll further indicated that minorities and NRA members are more likely than other groups to believe the Deep State exists.
“Monmouth said 35 percent of black, Latino and Asian Americans think the Deep State definitely exists, and 43 percent of NRA members ‘definitely believe in the existence of a Deep State operation in D.C.,’” reported The Washington Times.
Murray said this is due to residual historic prejudice and gun owners fearful of government overreach.
“Anxiety about a possible ‘Deep State’ is prevalent in both parties, but each has key constituent groups who express even greater concerns about the potential for government overreach. This includes racial and ethnic groups who still experience the effects of historical prejudice as well as gun owners who fear their constitutional rights are being threatened,” he said.
