The preferred transit route for large yachts in the Great Lakes to head south, and back north in the spring, is via the New York State Barge Canal (entered via Lake Ontario) and then down the Hudson River and out into the Atlantic. While some large yachts on Lake Michigan use the Chicago Sanitary Canal to get access into the Illinois/Mississippi River system for heading south or north, the preferred routing still remains the New York State Barge Canal.
