Original Message Well, things have started to really heat up after the close election on Tuesday night. I've decided to go ahead and start up a thread because the fur is really starting to fly over this.

It all started with election night voting problems.

Update of the Kansas governor's race. Husband just called me. He heard on the radio just now that they should have the results in at 8:00 a.m. They are citing long lines at the polls and slow data uptake from USB ports as the reasons for it taking so long to get the numbers in. Kake is still reflecting the 95% reporting figure with the 541 vote lead for Kobach.

Long lines before polls close in Wichita

"One of the polling places that had long lines Tuesday was out in northeast Wichita at the WSU Metroplex."

Long poll lines delay Kansas election results

"A Kansas official says long lines at polling places delayed election results in the state's most populous county as Gov. Jeff Colyer and Secretary of State Kris Kobach were locked in a tight race for the Republican nomination for governor."

Results were not finalized until 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. When the results were finalized Kobach had one by 191 votes.

At that point in time, they reiterated that they were not going to officially call the vote.

Unofficial results: Kobach upsets Colyer in tight GOP governor's race

"Unofficial results show Kris Kobach upset Jeff Colyer in the GOP primary for Kansas governor, but the race is too close to call.

With election officials in Kansas halting the vote count Wednesday morning, Secretary of State Kris Kobach leads Gov. Jeff Colyer by 191 votes. It could be a few days before all absentee votes are counted.

A new state law allows ballots postmarked as of Tuesday to be counted, so long as they arrive three days after Election Day."

Governor Colyer statement regarding election

"Given the historically close margin of the current tabulation, the presence of thousands of as yet uncounted provisional ballots and the extraordinary problems with the count, particularly in Johnson County, this election remains too close to call."

"All precincts have reported. Reminders: results are unofficial. Provisional ballots are not included. Some hand-counted paper ballots are not included. Ballots that were postmarked on or before yesterday and received by Friday will be included in final totals. #KsLeg"

Wednesday, they then went on to state that it could now take weeks before we had the official results.

Election official: Results could take a few weeks for Republican candidate for governor

"There were a lot of mixed emotions Wednesday from voters as they anxiously await results in the Republican primary for governor.

. . .

Since the race is so close, a recount has been a topic that's unavoidable.

. . .

When it comes to tallying the votes some have questioned the conflict of interest having the Secretary of State in the race."

Analyst on GOP primary race for governor: 'It's conceivable that the outcome can change'

"Mail-in ballots are still arriving and as long as they are postmarked by yesterday and arrive by Friday, they will count.

Also, provisional ballots still need to be counted.

Those two categories could add up to 8,000-10,000 more votes."

Thursday, things grew worse with accusations beginning to fly.

Governor Colyer opened a voting report hotline because he alleges his voters were having problems finding his name on the ballot, were forced to vote provisional, or were outright turned away.

Kobach's lead was also reduced to 121 down from the 191 due to a counting error on Thursday.

Colyer campaign releases statement regarding voting count error

"On Thursday, a reporting error in the vote count from Thomas County was discovered and corrected. The correction narrowed the 191 vote margin to just 91 votes."

Kobach firmer about staying out of vote count

"The net change in Haskell County is 30 votes in favor of Kobach, which moves his margin from 91 to 121 votes."

Colyer sent Kobach a letter on Thursday accusing him of providing guidance to county election officials and on national TV inconsistent with state law and even mentioned the possibility that it could lead to litigation.

Kobach firmer about staying out of vote count

"Colyer sent Kobach a letter Thursday that accuses him of giving county election officials guidance that is "inconsistent with Kansas law" about handling mailed-in and other ballots.

Colyer said in the letter that Kobach should have Attorney General Derek Schmidt, a fellow Republican, provide advice to county election officials instead."

In response Kobach did step down.

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach says he will remove himself from the further counting of votes while his Republican primary battle with Gov. Jeff Colyer hangs in the balance

"Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach said Thursday that he will remove himself from the further counting of votes while his Republican primary battle with Gov. Jeff Colyer hangs in the balance, describing it as a 'symbolic' step in response to a public demand from Colyer.

. . .

Kobach needled Colyer in a Fox Business network appearance Thursday evening, saying it would be 'pointless' to remove himself from the process because the state's 105 counties handle the counting of ballots but he might do so just to make Colyer 'feel good.'

But a little more than an hour later, questioned on CNN, Kobach said: 'I said, "Of course, if he wants me to, I would,"' and he has said, "OK, I do want you to," so I will.'"
