[quote:Isis One:MV8zOTA1Mzk0XzcwNDY3MTgzXzJFMjQ1NzhF] Doc Astromut gave this explanation with data. This is a semi-annual, equinox occurrence where the satellite falls into Earth's shadow. [quote:Dr. Deplorable Astromut:MV8zOTA2NjE3XzcwNDYyOTYzX0ZERjc5QTEy] [quote:Isis One:MV8zOTA2NjE3XzcwNDYyNzEyX0NGMkYxMTQ5] [quote:Dr. Deplorable Astromut:MV8zOTA2NjE3XzcwNDYyNjcwXzc2QjlCREQ0] [quote:Isis One:MV8zOTA2NjE3XzcwNDYyNDM2X0Y4MzIwOThC] Astro, someone said you explained the arc pattern on the solar flux chart (see below) as being due to SDO eclipse during equinox. I can't find the explanation on this thread or the one about the observatory shut down. If you could tell me which thread its on, I would appreciate it. TIA :flux anomoly:
It's a bit different than the SDO eclipses, but similar. It's due to eclipses occurring for geostationary satellites around the time of the equinox. GOES 15 dropouts perfectly match the timing of those eclipses as it passes into earth's shadow once a day. My software can be used with the orbital elements for GOES 15 instead of SDO and it shows the eclipse occurring at that time due to earth:
Thank you. So the eclipses explain the dropouts, but does that explain the arc?
Yes. The same pattern happens every eclipse season: https://satdat.ngdc.noaa.gov/sem/goes/data/plots/2018/goes15/qc/g15_epead_alphas_5m_qc_20180301-00h_20180331-24h.pdf https://satdat.ngdc.noaa.gov/sem/goes/data/plots/2017/goes15/qc/g15_xrs-euv_1m_qc_20170901-00h_20170930-24h.pdf https://satdat.ngdc.noaa.gov/sem/goes/data/plots/2017/goes15/qc/g15_xrs-euv_1m_qc_20170301-00h_20170331-24h.pdf https://satdat.ngdc.noaa.gov/sem/goes/data/plots/2016/goes15/qc/g15_xrs-euv_1m_qc_20160901-00h_20160930-24h.pdf

Original Message
I have never seen this pattern in 10 years of watching this chart. It is showing some type of rhythmic pulsation at low energy levels (red and blue half loops) on the sun. No idea what would cause this. Credit to Cosmo888 who just posted this on Nin's Solar thread.

EDIT Pattern Continues for third day!!!

9-18-18 UPDATE:
After thinking about it:
MY THEORY
There are lines of magnetic connection between the earth and the sun and we are learning the energy can travel both ways. I suspect the earth is sending a very specific kind of magnetic energy to the sun and this is causing the pattern, which we can add a third day now. Also, the timing (Fall Solstice) is an important factor as "cracks" in earth's magnetosphere are common during this period. I love that earth and the sun have this reciprocal relationship.
