President Trump discussed the possibility of swapping out Jeff Sessions with Matt Whitaker, Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ chief of staff, according to a new report.
The conversation between Trump and Whitaker was vague, and it was uncertain if Trump planned on nominating Whitaker to take over the Justice Department permanently, or if it would be a temporary position for Whitaker, sources briefed on the conversation told the Washington Post. Additionally, it remains unclear how serious Trump is about the plan.
Although Trump is eyeing a replacement for Sessions, White House officials told the Post they predict Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller’s federal Russia probe, to remain at the Justice Department until the 2018 midterm elections conclude.
However, the White House officials anticipate that both Sessions and Rosenstein will depart the agency shortly after the midterm elections.
A Justice Department spokesperson refused to comment to the Post.
