Russia and China are actually there to help.
They are there for geopolitical reasons same as us. All this good guy bad guy stuff is bull. Russia, China, and the US all have imperial power and that means they have "junior partners". Everybody wants the country with the largest proven oil reserves to be their junior partner. In this particular case the US gets to side against a socialist dictator. But if embracing a socialist dictator accomplishes the goal then so be it. And I'm not against this. Balance of power and stability can be had in such ways. And as a US citizen I desire my country to have wide influence and power.
Fair comment. However the vast majority of Venezuelans are firmly against seeing their resources and their jobs be plundered and privatized in the interest of the US corporations. They've already had that experience many years ago and it meant many had to live in desperate poverty. No doubt they're also bitter at the US' attempts to bring the country to its knees with the crippling sanctions. If the delusional US neocons toppled Maduro, the country would enter an unending state of civil war. The US wants the oil , but they'll find it hard to benefit from Venezuela's oil in a situation like that. Plus there could very well be a refugee/migrant crisis making its way to the US. Is this what the US really wants?
The US can't outright take the oil. Not in these circumstances. I think some oil field leases to US companies and the assurance that Venezuelan oil continues to be sold in dollars would be enough. And is that so horrible? Venezuela gets aid, gets out of debts to Russia and China (maybe), gets their oil infrastructure rebuilt, gets some foreign investments...all for some leases and a petrodollar deal.
We’re expecting a statement from @POTUS soon (who is right now in Oval Office) on #Venezuela and it is expected he might recognize opposition leader @jguaido as the South American country’s legitimate leader
