China is also running to get 10 petawatts the laser Physicists are planning to build lasers so powerful they could rip apart empty space The researchers are now upgrading their laser and hope to beat their own record by the end of this year with a 10-PW shot, which would pack more than 1000 times the power of all the world's electrical grids combined. http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/01/physicists-are-planning-build-lasers-so-powerful-they-could-rip-apart-empty-space
That aint going to fire its beam for any significant length of time.. probably not even a nano second.
But that is an advantage, not a disadvantage. The shorter the period the higher the energy per volume you can achieve. With high enough energy densities, the targets you hit might start transmuting into other materials, fusing together which produces energy just like it is the case for our sun. That might not be a great way to produce energy, given the efficiency of the lasers as in how much energy you have to put into the pulse vs how much you get out but it certainly helps with amplifying the pulse's energy and completely vaporizing your target. Romania’s laser reached world’s top nominal power: 7 petawatts!
"Last year, researchers reached the intermediate power that was actually in line with the 3 petawatts plan, and now it enters the final tests for a nominal power of 10 petawatts. Today it has been confirmed that world's highest power of 7 petawatts has been reached", Professor Zamfir said.
