My criteria for this distinction is a film that was both written and directed by people from Generation X.
Since Generation X is defined as being people born from 1961 to 1981, I think the only possible choice is
The Matrix
. The Wachowskis wrote and directed the film, and they were both born in the mid-1960s. I can't imagine choosing any other film because
The Matrix
could be the most influential film ever made.
My second choice is
Momento
. It was written and directed by Christopher Nolan (born in 1970).
