Jupiter’s Great Red Spot is being chipped away. The planet-circling jet stream around it is ‘flaking’ off sections — some bigger than 10,000km — of the weakening bright orange-red swirl.
It’s a growing phenomenon.
And it’s one Australian amateur astronomer and renown Jupiter observer Anthony Wesley (who discovered a 500m asteroid impact on Jupiter in July 2009) has been keenly observing.
