First a little background information concerning the United States in the 20th century, which many here are not going to like.
Until the Civil Rights Act of 1964, 'People of Color' African Americans in particular, but also other races with dark skin, were strictly forbidden from using 'White Only' facilities. This was known as 'Segregation of public facilities' which included water fountains, bathrooms, restaurants, housing, public transportation and much more. The Military was also Segregated completely. If you were "A Colored" you didn't have any rights, besides the right to exist. (We're going to get to why this is relevant later, when we jump into the topic of German POW's brought to the US at the request of the British)
Now on to Germany and Nazism, and how a large percentage of the American people AT THAT TIME, and the American Government, felt about it, right up until 1938 (We'll get into why this year was so important as we maneuver the tangled web).... As per Radio Hosts like Charles Coughlin, a Canadian-American Roman Catholic Priest, and an extremely influential and respected 'authority' on Religious and Geo-Political matters, he was listened to by most of the nation when he spoke. He and others had led the nation to believe that Nazism was ONLY a defense mechanism against Communism. He also very vocally linked the J'ish people to Communism, Liberalism, and 'Anti-Christ' behavior. There are still archives of his shows that you can listen to, to understand just how convincing he was when he spoke. Many today in 2019, will still agree with every word he had to say, and when it came to the horrors and atrocities of Communism, he was accurate. (I'm not going to shill for either side of the spectrum, I'm just trying to lay this out accurately for you)
During the early 1900's, 19-teens, 1920's, and 1930's, J'ish people were subject to some of the same exclusionary policies as people of color, although nowhere near as extreme. Still though, the intensity of it was present in everyday life, especially in academia, where one was easily blackballed from higher learning for being J'ish, looked down upon, and treated differently in every respect, partially due to people like 'Father Coughlin' and partially due to other factors.
The United States Government didn't really like J'ish people, overtly because many were associated with Liberalism, some with Communism, and perhaps also covertly on racial and religious grounds, but there's not much evidence to back that up. If you were J'ish in the 1920's, you could drink from the 'White Only' water fountains, and use 'White Only' public facilities, as well as own property with full legal rights, something that people like "Father Coughlin" detested, because they used those rights to denounce him constantly, and he'd end up having to spend a lot of his show time rebutting publications from J'ish institutions. People of color had no such power to have their own magazine outlets, nor did they have the educational intellect or legal knowledge to do it.
If this post goes through without a ban or some other bullshit, we'll get to 1938, what changed in the minds of our Government, and why the US ended up going to war against Germany.
