Original Message Meet the Army’s New Robo-Mule

As long as their were soldiers, militaries have looked for ways to alleviate weight from their fighters' shoulders. Now, in 2019, things have gone robotic. The U.S. Army is buying hundreds of Squad Multipurpose Equipment Transport unmanned vehicles. SMET can carry up to a thousand pounds of equipment and follow soldiers like a loyal dog, freeing them to concentrate on the mission—and not the hundred or more pounds on their aching backs.

According to Defense News, the U.S. Army will buy 624 of General Dynamics’ Land Systems MUTT (Multi-Utility Tactical Transport) for $162.4 million. The MUTT is an 8x8 unmanned ATV designed to follow soldiers on their route, carrying their gear for them and allowing them to concentrate on the mission.

In case you were wondering, the pricetag works out to $259,000 per MUTT. We could issue soldiers a Ferrari for less money.
