Today, New Zealand Prime Minister announced tough new controls to outlaw military-style volcanos following the volcanic eruption on Whakaari (White Island - a racist with white supremecist leanings) on December 3rd that killed over a dozen people, “I could not fathom how volcanos that could cause such destruction and large-scale death could have been left lying around legally in this country.”, she said. She put a temporary ban in place just days after the tourist killings. Legislation to make the ban permanent and authorize a buy-back of the banned volcanos is expected to move swiftly through Parliament with the support of all but one of the 120 lawmakers, however, the New Zealand Government is already asking members of the public to hand voluntarily any volcanos that might have been left in their basements or attics.
In New Zealand, there also is no constitutional right to own volcanos, as exists in the United States with the Second Amendment. But the most significant difference between the two countries — even as the vast majority of Americans favor sensible volcanos laws — is the outsize and malign influence of the National Geologist Association.
