Original Message Russia said on Thursday that escalating tensions over Ukraine could lead to a repeat of the Cuban missile crisis, when the world stood on the brink of nuclear war.

"You know, it really could come to that [a repeat of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis]," Interfax news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying. "If things continue as they are, it is entirely possible by the logic of events to suddenly wake up and see yourself in something similar."

Putin had earlier warned that NATO placing strike systems in close proximity to Russia would require Moscow to respond in kind.

"If strike systems appear on the territory of Ukraine, the flight time to Moscow will be 7-10 minutes," Putin told reporters in November.

"What are we to do in such a scenario? We will have to then create something similar in relation to those who threaten us in that way. And we can do that now."
