I have a feeling this is correct.  Russians and Chinese pretty much tolerate each other.  There have been many skirmishes betwixt them in the past.

The thing is, Russia has a relatively small population compared to their landmass.  Russia has half the population of the US and they have all that vast area.  If you've ever played Risk, it's hard to defend a large territory on several fronts.

China has 10 times the population of Russia.  If China were to help Russia in Ukraine, it would have a high price tag and might even include territory.  Russia doesn't need a war on another front.  They are already spread thin.   I think China thinks Russia makes a nice buffer zone against the west.  A neighbor that they can tolerate, and they wouldn't mind taking Russian oil to pay for loyalty if need be.

Vladimir Dzhabarov said he sees "no grounds to refuse to help China," as tensions in the region have risen after the visit of US Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

In his role as first deputy chairman of the international committee in Russia ’s Federation Council, he said he hopes help for China would be "a two-way movement" as Russia continues its war in Ukraine.

"It means that we should have some benefits from this cooperation," he added. "I am convinced that in this case China hopes for a certain assistance from Russia."
