In the fictional world of comics, you have clashes between secret leagues of superheroes and societies of supervillains which somehow remain independently funded and competently staffed - like S.H.I.E.L.D and Hydra. In the real world, the supervillains were smarter and realized that organizations like "The Justice League" can't exist without billion dollar annual budgets, so the first thing they did was take over the international money supply itself. You don't need kryptonite to take down Superman, just predatory loans, compound interest and an army of lobbyists. Comic book billionaire heroes are often used as a Deus Ex Machina for this problem, but in the real world, such individuals either receive a bullet to the head before they've attained their fortune, or death threats to their children if they dare to stand in the villains' way.
