Thanks to the current administration, the country currently has only an estimated, and rather alarming, 25 days supply of diesel fuel. Sounds ominous, but people are misunderstanding what this means.
Refineries are currently producing diesel fuel in quantity; because of this, as long as the refineries remain in operation, we will not “run out”. The 25-day figure is a projection of how long it would take, at current consumption rates, to use up all available refined diesel currently in storage. The trucks, construction equipment and trains aren’t going to stop running 25 days from now unless the refineries all suddenly stop producing diesel, which, short of a thermonuclear war or coordinated sabotage by a state actor, is improbable in the extreme.
Granted, the cushion amount of refined product needs to be greatly increased (60 to 90 days would be a much more comfortable range), but any talk of impending diesel doom is unwarranted.
