According to the Israeli Statistics Bureau, 15% of the population of Israel are native Russian speakers. That's slightly more than 1 million.

Approximately 30% of them are ethnic Russians and Ukrainians having some J ancestry, or spouses of J. 70% are ethnic J born in the former Soviet Union or their children.

Yes, it is true unfortunately. There are several types of discrimination Russian Israelis encounter: institutional discrimination, “glass ceiling” at work places and social exclusion.

[b]Institutional Discrimination[/b]

[b]All Russian J are considered “doubtful J” by the Chief Rabbinate and have to prove their J when they wish to marry.[/b] Since there are no civil marriages in Israel, it affects all J born in the former USSR and their children born in Israel.
Many ex-Soviet born Israelis cannot obtain high security clearance, therefore they are prevented from working in the military industry or serving in quality positions in the army. It particularly affects those who have kept their original citizenship and those who have close relatives in FSU countries.

[b]Glass Ceiling[/b]

Almost 30 years have passed since 1 million people arrived from the USSR. Yet today there are almost no senior army/police officers, judges or any other government officials from this community.
Russian J are well integrated in the Israeli High-Tech industry, but most of them are employed in technical roles and almost no one has reached senior management positions, except those who have founded their own startups.

Israeli born women mostly refuse to date men who have identifiable Russian origin, such as accent, personal name or appearance.
People who immigrated after the primary school age usually don’t have locally born friends.
Russian Israelis are absent from the mass media. There are no news anchors, political commentators, reporters or any other TV personalities from the community. Russian Israelis are seldom invited to talk shows as guests. The only exception is various comedy shows, where “Russian" characters are constantly ridiculed for their accent and mannerisms.

Tel Aviv police on horseback tried to stop demonstrators breaching barricades as traffic piled up.
