[quote:Anonymous Coward 472995:MV81NzczNTNfODc5OTg3MV9CMEJDN0E2Qg==] [quote:Anonymous Coward 472971] Mossberg or maverick (cheaper but made by mossberg) 12 gauge shotgun. Use 2 3/4 shells for less of a kick. Will also handle 3" shells. Buy one with either an 18 inch barrel or 20" inch barrel. The 20 inch will hold 8+1 shells, while the 18 inch will be a little lighter and hold 6+1 shells. Buy a shock absorbing knoxx stock Go to cabelas and search for knoxx. The knoxx stock pistol grip and regular stock both have recoil reduction within them. I have a maverick 20 inch security shotgun with this stock installed and I am very happy with it. http://www.knoxx.com/products/SpecOps_Stock.php http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp?id=0012785224733a&type=product&cmCat=SEARCH&returnPage=search-results1.jsp&QueryText=knoxx&N=4887&Ntk=Products&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=knoxx&noImage=0
Definitely look into that knoxx stock. It makes all the difference in the world. It's a shock absorber for your shoulder!
Original Message
I am woman looking for a shotgun for home defense. I don't know anyone who owns one and would need to purchase one before taking it to a range to get training. I am familiar with handguns, but "long" guns are a whole new world.
Any opinions on type, make and gauge is welcome.
I have been told by gun shop people that Mossberg (500 model)is good and that Remington (870 home defense or Marine Magnum) is better. They all seem to agree that pump action is the best for my needs. I don't know what to choose for gauge. Since I haven't had a chance to fire one, I am worried that the recoil on a 12ga will be too much. Maybe a 20ga? I am average size and strong, so I could probably learn anything, but it needs to be comfortable. I was very surprised by the weight of these guns and am also worried it will be hard to hold it for a length of time if needed. PLEASE HELP.
If I was your girlfriend, sister, mom, what would you recommend.
Thanks again for the help.
