[quote:Defleshed 495859:MV82OTQ1NTBfMTA2MDk4MjJfMUQ0MDcxRTk=] [quote:Anonymous Coward 531849] 357mag handgun 30 x 30 rifle [/quote] i wouldn't take a 357 magnum for home defense, unless you were going to load it with 38 specials (assuming there are children and women in the home also) For home defense Id go with a 45 ACP chambered Glock, Heckler and Koch USP, or 1911 (the old reliables, you want something you can hang your life off). As a semi auto rifle, go with either a 308 NATO (expensive) or 7.62x39mm AK cartridge. Look for a DSA FAL or PTR-91 for the 308, and any eastern European AK47 makes (Romanian, polish, ect... just don't get a Chinese AK since they are finicky about magazines sometimes) I dont want to start a WW3 fight on whats better, AR15s or AK47s, if you want an AR15 (i do not explicitly like them for defense or the 223 round for defense) go with Stag Arms or Bushmaster, there are other decent makes also. As for a shotgun, pumps are traditionally more reliable and do not have as many problems with failing to feed or failing to eject, and are far cheaper in most cases. I'd go with a Mossberg 500A, or a benelli super 90 in 12 gauge. If it came down to just 1 single weapon for home defense from intruders, no conventional firearm beats a shotgun with 00 buck. Period. Original Message
I need advice on what firearms to purchase. They would be used primarily for home / personal defense. I'm not experienced when it comes to firearms so whatever I do I'll be getting training and will go to a range to learn and practice. I live in Virginia and may even consider concealed carry permit. I'm looking to purchase a shotgun or semi-auto rifle and a handgun. Can't spend too much so would be looking for a balance between value and quality and would even consider a used firearm. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
