During the past two years United Missouri Bank and Commerce Bank have been radically changing the way they process deposits, credits, and payments.
First it was UMB and the policy of pay the largest check first, regardless of what time of day it came in. For example, you have 5 checks or debits that have posted and you're overdrawn by .12, this initiates an overdraft fee. The bank then pays the largest amount first and bounces the rest, due to overdraft fees. At $35 a whack you just lost $140+/-, and must pay up before the payments hit the account again.
UMB's reason for the policy change is that to many people were complaining that their mortgages weren't getting paid. So now your mortgage gets paid but your lights, water, gas, and trash service all get shut off.
Second is Commerce Bank and their policy of counting pending payments that haven't posted yet to your account. In other words, forget running to the bank and making a deposit to cover your account. Not as complicated but just as effective.
What's next? The only thing missing at this point is if you write a check and date it today and run to the bank to cover it tomorrow, only to be charge an overdraft fee based on the date of the check, not when it posted.
