Original Message I am surprised this wasn't posted already. I checked and refreshed the front page twice, did not see anything on it. Iris shows it as a 7.2. Anyone have any more info?

A powerful earthquake has struck the Fiji Islands. The magnitude 7.2 quake, capable of generating huge tsunamis and great damage, struck the South Pacific island chain just before 11 p.m., (5:44 a.m. EST) catching most residents while they slept.

The quake occurred deep under the Earth's crust, about 60 miles north of the capital of Suva.. There were no immediate reports of damage or whether a tsunami alert was issued. Such alerts are oftentimes declared locally. The Fiji Islands are in a seismically active area and less powerful earthquakes are relatively common.
