My hubby was born in Brooklyn (his fam is from the Dominican Republic) and we he first moved down here over 13 years ago, he thought it was weird that the school districts down here never really "acknowledged" if you will, MLK Day. I guess they always had the day off in Brooklyn.
After some time, he became use to it.
It wasn't until Obama became POTUS that many districts down here starting giving the kids the day off of school. I think it's pretty nice, except for the part that it didn't happen till Obama became the prez.
