Anonymous Coward User ID: 647873 ![]() 03/07/2010 06:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | American Letter Mail Company The American Letter Mail Company was started by Lysander Spooner in 1844, competing with the legal monopoly of the United States Post Office (USPO) (now the USPS) in violation of the Private Express Statutes. It succeeded in delivering mail for lower prices, but the U.S. Government challenged Spooner with legal measures, eventually forcing him to cease operations in 1851.[1] Competition with the U.S. Post Office Department Spooner's intentions were founded on both an ethical perspective, as he considered government monopoly to be an immoral restriction, as well as an economic analysis, as he believed that 5 cents was sufficient to send mail throughout the country. The American Letter Mail Company was able to reduce the price of its stamps significantly and even offered free local delivery, significantly undercutting the 12 cent stamp being sold by the Post Office Department. Although the business was forced by the U.S. Government to close shop after only a few years, it succeeded in temporarily driving down the cost of government delivered mail. _Storm_ User ID: 362931 ![]() 03/07/2010 08:34 AM ![]() Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A couple of years ago about three weeks before Christmas, I noticed we had not gotten any mail for four days. It stood out to me because I was expecting an important piece of mail. I happened to be coming home as the mail truck arrived on day four, so I waited in the driveway. The mail carrier was only two doors down. Anyway, he speeds on by the house and I note that he is not our regular carrier. Anyway, I called the post office a bit later and mentioned we had not gotten mail in several days and how unusual that was. In my mind I was thinking even junk mail would have shown up by then. But I only mentioned the mail we were expecting. The lady on the phone says "Maam, you sometimes you have to order catalogs, they are not automatic." WTF? Who said anything...anyway I told her it was business mail. So then she says our carrier just walked in. She asked him about it, and he told her to tell me that we just don't get much mail. That next monday, we got so much mail our regular carrier could barely stuff it in the box. My piece of mail that I had been expecting was there. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 909168 ![]() 03/07/2010 08:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Postage prices probably ARE the reason that mail volume is declining. So far, I've resisted on-line banking, but looks like it may be time to start using it. About all I need the mail for anyway is paying bills, so I'll just save the price of postage. I used to send a lot of Christmas cards, but for several years I've only sent them to family that aren't "family" enough for gifts! |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 907582 ![]() 03/07/2010 09:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Easy fix for this... just charge the same for junk mail as they do a regular first class letter. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 901382Solution is good, and another one would be to make junk mail illegal and anyone who sends junk mail would be fined - fines going strait to USPS. Since a lot of junk mail is credit card offers, you know they would have the money to pay the rate or the fine since they make all that interest off people's credit cards! |

I used to send a lot of Christmas cards, but for several years I've only sent them to family that aren't "family" enough for gifts! Only part true. The INTERNET has replaced snail mail. I used to snail mail family & friends, but now none of them get snail mail at all, with the exception of Christmas and birthdays. Bills are also paid online quite a bit, so you don't even really need snail mail for that. There are numerous electronic tax programs online so less people are mailing in to the IRS. Besides it takes 10 days to get an online filed refund compared to 6 weeks when mailed in. All these factors combined. |

The Milkman User ID: 309689 ![]() 03/07/2010 09:44 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is more about feds snooping & total control of the mail, and feds coming by the house every day. Once a week is plenty for most. And NO junk mail or advertising. Cutting junk mail would reduce the work load dramatically. If we want to buy something we can look for it without being solicited. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 788813 ![]() 03/07/2010 09:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | It is all about CONTROL. They want everyone off paper and cash - once that is done, they will have us by the short hairs. Tell the average American how much money the government will save by reducing mail to 3 times per week and they will demand it, never stopping to think about the repercussions. It is similar to the TV switch from analog to digital - CONTROL. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 728979 ![]() 03/07/2010 10:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Are they making noises in hopes of being offered a "bail-out"? What's going to happen to the properties they own and lease? There's alot of real estate connected to the Post Office. (In the '60's in my little town we had mail delivery twice a day, morning and afternoon. Letters were postmarked with date AND time.) |
