Government "workers" make a lot more dough than the people they supposedly "work" for.

Federal pay ahead of private industry
By Dennis Cauchon, USA TODAY

Updated 2d 11h ago

Federal employees earn higher average salaries than private-sector workers in more than eight out of 10 occupations, a USA TODAY analysis of federal data finds.

Accountants, nurses, chemists, surveyors, cooks, clerks and janitors are among the wide range of jobs that get paid more on average in the federal government than in the private sector.

Overall, federal workers earned an average salary of $67,691 in 2008 for occupations that exist both in government and the private sector, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. The average pay for the same mix of jobs in the private sector was $60,046 in 2008, the most recent data available.

CHART: Federal salaries compared to private-sector

These salary figures do not include the value of health, pension and other benefits, which averaged $40,785 per federal employee in 2008 vs. $9,882 per private worker, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Federal pay has become a hot political issue in recent months because of concerns over the federal budget deficit and recession-battered wages in the private sector.

Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., made federal pay an issue in his successful campaign to fill Edward Kennedy's seat and is fighting for a pay freeze.

The federal government spends about $125 billion annually on compensation for about 2 million civilian employees.

"The data flip the conventional wisdom on its head," says Cato Institute budget analyst Chris Edwards, a critic of federal pay policy. "Federal workers make substantially more than private workers, not less, in addition to having a large advantage in benefits."

But contractors to the FedGov hired as salaried exempt employees are lowest paid slave labor. Exempt means exempt from labor laws such as being made to work 60 hours a week and only get paid for 40 without comp. time. No overtime pay ever.

Welcome to my world. Not bitching 'cause at least I got a job that can put food on the table. You gotta do whatcha gotta do.

Or, I could go on welfare.

Which is pretty much the same thing as "working" for the "government".

Only with welfare, you don't even have to pretend to "work".

Is the government to blame or is it the private sector who continues to ship jobs over seas or import illegal immigration to keep their costs low so management can get the big savings?

The government jobs are where private sector jobs should be if they kept up with inflation. I blame the private sector management and not government. If the private sector management innovated and had good management abilities instead of shipping jobs over seas and claiming intelligence then the private sector would be higher.

use to be federal and state employees didn't make much but they had a good retirement program to make up for it. The unions have come in and seen to it that they and state workers make great wages and a great retirement. Unions Obama's army are the ruination of our governments budgets. Lets take a firefighter in LA.. retires with a 147,000 annual retirement paycheck.. its 100% of their wages. Thats why the states and our federal government are going broke.

Re: Federal employees earn higher average salaries than private-sector workers in more than eight out of 10 occupations
You know what happens here, is that in some occupations you have to get a lot of college but the jobs don't earn that much. For example, registered nurses often have 4 year degrees.

Part of the gov't pay scale system is organized by years of college and experience. So nurses with 4+ years of college get paid (somewhat) based on that much education, whereas nurses out IRL don't get paid as much as their education should earn them.

On the other hand, engineers make MORE out in the real world than the usual person with 4 years of schooling, so they have to have a special pay scale, but they still get paid less than the private sector engineers.

This is all because the dummy, one-size-fits-all pay scheme that the government uses, doesn't really take into account difficulty of degree work or market value of the work product.

Re: Federal employees earn higher average salaries than private-sector workers in more than eight out of 10 occupations
Eight out of ten employees of those same jobs in the private sector could not pass the qualifying exams to become a federal employee. A 700-series federal battery exam takes just about four hours to complete and requires only a 70% passing score... but thousands of people fail it every time it's offered; the average American worker can barely manage to string together enough words to create a complete sentence.

True, there are thousands of really lazy, arrogant and genuinely nasty people on the federal workforce - but, they ALL have one thing in common: they were smart enough to recognise an opportunity and seize it... and pass the tests required. They also learned quickly how to exploit the system by using the unions to whittle away the concept of personal accountability.

It is also true that there are far MORE federal employees who are trying to do the best job they can than those parasites they have to work with.

federal employees are at risk of losing their jos every day w to make matters worse we now are forced to use new ID cards that track our every movement

yes we have a job yes we make more than other people in the private sector who perform the same task but we also are under intense stress and work in a 1984 George Orwell type of environment and it's getting worse ever day.

Yes we are thankful for our jobs if you like working in a prison environment come on aboard join us they promote you if you play dumb or are dumb if you're intelligent and a creative thinker you are denied promotional opportunities and you are given low evaluative scores.

So before you turn your sights on the federal government know that half the people working in it and for it are just like you.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 909968

This is a ridiculously false claim.

Why you're always broke: 40% of your money goes to taxes
Between federal, state and local governments in the United States, about 40% of Americans’ income goes to taxes and various statutory fees. And that’s why you’re having so much trouble getting ahead.
[link to www.homelandstupidity.us]

Don't you think 40% of people's income being taken by government has a lot to do with their wages being 'too low'? I don't know if this even factors in inflation. And it is unlikely that it factors in the endless indirect costs.

Not to mention that the United States is nowhere near capitalist, and has not been for a very long time, making the entire argument rather silly.

The Myth of the Free Market: Fractional Banking and Private Currencies

[link to video.godlikeproductions.com]

Capitalism is an economic system in which wealth, and the means of producing wealth, are privately owned.[1][2] Through capitalism, the land, labor, and capital are owned, operated, and traded, without force or fraud, by private individuals either singly or jointly,[3][4] and investments, distribution, income, production, pricing and supply of goods, commodities and services are determined by voluntary private decision in a market economy.

Michael Moore and Arianna Huffington agree that our problems are not the result of capitalism.
