OMFG!!!!!!!! UBUNTU LINUX JUST LOST 450GB OF DATA ON MY HARD DISK!! HELP
I was trying to install onto my other hard disk and was just messing around with the setup being very carefull not to touch the segate 1TB drive, but i failed to get it to install and booted into windows the G: drive is fucked!!! oh no!!!

It appears blank windows says : "The volume does not contain a recognized file system. POlease make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volme is not corrupted."

its completely blank it does not even have a file system on it.

it did not do any long formats or anything in the linux setup
so im hoping all my data is still on the disk....

what the heck do i do,, is there a good hardisk data recovery prog, and where do i start.

Help would be really appreciated.

First... learn to make backups.
Second, search for a recovery program. There are plenty (including free ones) on the nets. Google is your friend here.
Third, even if you formated the respective partition the data should still be there if nothing was written on it.
Fourth, be careful when installing stuff :) something like Partition Magic helps you more on planing.

Have you tried googleing: "undelete program for ubuntu" ?

Here's one link I found right away:
[link to www.ubuntu-unleashed.com]

Some other links I found were from websites that weren't safe to visit. If you don't have "WOT" (web of trust) installed as a browser add-on, you are a sitting duck when you go visiting strange websites.

Get WOT here: [link to www.mywot.com]

Yep, you can even potentially recover data that is on overwritten sectors. Lots of variables with this though.

Funny how people think when you delete something. format the drive or empty the recycle bin shits gone forever. Thats not how it works.

I have seen software recover data from deleted encrypted partitions.

Then you set it to read only and create an image of the drive, fuck around with a backup image of the drive instead, try to recover data from those rather than loading the actual drive, you could potentially overwrite parts of the drive whilst trying to recover other parts.

Did you say you are now booted into windows and can't see a partition created in ubuntu? or did you originally have Windows and were messing with an ubuntu install.

If the latter is the case you may be SOL.

I have used binarybits from binarylabs.com sucessfully many times.

can read deleted partitions.

Re: OMFG!!!!!!!! UBUNTU LINUX JUST LOST 450GB OF DATA ON MY HARD DISK!! HELP
I think you should give up manually installing Linux without a computer expert on your side. My husband had to adapt the bios for a dual hard drive and it took me weeks to have every bit and pieces configured the way they should when the computer had not been manufactured by Linux.

On a side note, I am on Suse, I bought the packaged CD of opensuse 11.2 and you have nice informations for the installation for beginners and 90 days installation support.

I could have taken the free online version but somehow the burned CD would not boot.

P.S. to trinity: your voice chat is not working on the latest firefox version for windows.

I know this seems like a stupid question, but have you tried booting a live linux distro (no install streamed from cd/dvd/thumbdrive) and looking at the drive that way?

Nice Ubuntu thread bashing title.

User operator error = UBUNTU fault?

Go figure.

Notto worry but you may have to get at least a 1/2 tb drive to save your files onto.

Torrent or pay for...

Data Recovery Wizard Professional 4.3.6

Install and run, but you will need a large enough space to move your data onto.

I know from recent experience, accidentally kicked out a cord from my external 1tb as I was doing a partition operation on it.

Saved everything without a hitch and now I have 2 1tb drives to load up!

Wish I could have blamed it on windows though...

Re: OMFG!!!!!!!! UBUNTU LINUX JUST LOST 450GB OF DATA ON MY HARD DISK!! HELP
i dont know why it lost my G drive, i think its just lost the info that tells it what size and file system its running.

I was trying to install linux on the other disk i swear i was being super carefull, i allowed it to try and format the other disk so it could then instal ubuntu, but it apparently formatted it with a jurnal file system or something and then when i clicked forward it said no root file system selected or something!!
I exited and booted to windows and what do you know!! G:\ drive is blank!

there is software that can probably fix that problem

something like that might work

[link to www.recovermyfiles.com]

you'll need to have the hard drive plugged into the same machine

I'm assuming you lost windows files while trying to install linux?

Damn that software is just going to load me a bullshit preview window of the data i could recover if i purchase the full version..

I think i just need to re initilize the drive like run fdisk?? or something.

any ideas

Linux reformats the drive with a differnet file system than windows. You only have a small chance of being able to restore it.

Get Paragon Hard disk Manager 2009 (was a full working demo available). At try to unformat the drive and restore the original partitions

I think the key here is the error message.

"The volume does not contain a recognized file system"

Windows support says
Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume is not corrupt.Contact your system administrator to make sure all required file system drivers are loaded.

Run the Chkdsk utility to check for a corrupted volume

i know it sounds too good to be true, but many times checkdisk /f has repair my problems. Run it from the windows run command mode and it will give you a dos window and prompt you to reboot after typing y for yes.

Caution, some versions of windows do not have checkdisk for unknown reasons.
