Current account balance: $-2.021 billion (2003) Azerbaijan´s number one export is oil. Azerbaijan´s oil production declined through 1997 but has registered an increase every year since. Negotiation of production-sharing arrangements (PSAs) with foreign firms, which have thus far committed $60 billion to long-term oilfield development, should generate the funds needed to spur future industrial development. Oil production under the first of these PSAs, with the Azerbaijan International Operating Company, began in November 1997. Azerbaijan shares all the formidable problems of the former Soviet republics in making the transition from a command to a market economy, but its considerable energy resources brighten its long-term prospects. Baku has only recently begun making progress on economic reform, and old economic ties and structures are slowly being replaced. One obstacle to economic progress is the need for stepped up foreign investment in the non-energy sector. A second obstacle is the continuing conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Trade with Russia and the other former Soviet republics is declining in importance while trade is building with Turkey and the nations of Europe. Long-term prospects will depend on world oil prices, the location of new pipelines in the region, and Azerbaijan´s ability to manage its oil wealth. The shortest diststace from there is 659KM. The Tamakawk´s range is 1104 km, so its Tehran is well with in reach from the persian gulf. Tehran is well out of reach of Tamahawks from the mediterranian sea, but a hand full of other provinces are just within reach.. i cant be botherd to resarch into this anymore.. maybe somone could figure out the range of various american bombers and fighters from their bases in the region. |

While being closer is more convenient and cheaper, in air refueling pretty much negates distance being much of a factor. |
Octo 12/08/2005 10:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | RUMSFELD’S BAKU TRIP STIRS CONTROVERSY Alman Talyshli 4/13/05 Rumsfeld’s visit took place under extreme secrecy, with limited public information, leaving many local analysts and pundits to speculate about the reasons for the US secretary of defense’s trip, the third such visit in the past 15 months. Most observers look to the issue of US military bases in Azerbaijan as a possible cause. Last year, considerable speculation focused on the possibility that worsening relations between Washington and Tehran would push the American military to seek bases in Azerbaijan, Iran’s northern neighbor, in preparation for any possible attack on the Islamic Republic. Although the White House has since opted for diplomatic negotiations to deal with Iran’s nuclear energy program, many Middle East experts continue to believe that military force remains an ongoing option. The Pentagon and US Azerbaijan embassy web sites contained no information on Rumsfeld’s one-day visit to Baku, and Azerbaijani officials preferred to keep their explanations general. The purpose of the defense secretary’s visit, Ali Hasanov, head of the presidential administration’s political department, told the ANS television news station on April 10, "is to hold new discussions on the principles of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the USA in the sphere of security and [to] solve problems present in this sphere." Hasanov also emphasized Azerbaijan’s role in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Partnership for Peace program, citing Rumsfeld’s participation "in cooperation issues implemented within the framework of NATO." I bet it´s cuz they have a nuclear program. So, what? US gov also has one. What, the gov can do w/e they want and yet still they want to police the world and not practice what they preach themselves." First of all, I think you need to learn some spelling, grammer. Come on, how long does take to actually spell "what" and "because" instead of "wat" and "cuz"? People will take you much more serious if you just TRY. And you will not make yourself sound like an idiot to the rest of us. Second, what the heck are you talking about? If you want to talk nuclear weapons, fine. The United States allows other countries to have nuclear weapons... we are not the only ones. We do not prevent other countries like Russia, People´s Republic of China, France, UK, India, and Pakistan. The reason for not wanting Iran and also North Korea is because their governments are not as stable as France, UK, and the other. Another reason is because their government is a theocratic republic and the other is a Communist state one-man dictatorship. Looking at both government.... can you actually say you want either one of them to have nuclear weapons? If your not 14 years old and have some common sense. I think you will see that would be a bad idea. |
