Good places to sleep when homeless?

IMHO there are none. I have seen some in the high under areas of bridges at the sides, but get run off by cops. That provides cover from elements. Also there are large drainage ditches with pipes to cover the upper. Why would you need these?

There's a homeless guy in my area that sleeps in the goodwill drop-off box at night. He emerges every day with clean clothes. No lie!

If you have a car, sleep in the car in the woods.

There are so many ways to set up cheap housing for the homeless. Why can't cities allow that. Tents, shacks, boxes, ought to be allowed as long as there are any homeless people that need them. They shouldn't have to worry about the police chasing them away,ever.

Don't you have friends or family that could help you out? This is very sad...be safe.

There are variables you didn't mention, are you in a big city? Medium sized city? Where are the soup kitchens? Ask the other street people what they are doing. I was there for a bit- the first thing I did was to find out where people ate and then ask others where they slept. I was fortunate to be in a city where there were wooded areas near downtown. Be friends with the other homeless, they have learned a few things, Don't ask them for anything- you can spange just like them if you need a couple bucks for this or that. They already know where to sleep, don't try to reinvent the wheel. Good luck to you!

Foreclosed/vacant homes. Find one you can access through inconspicous means (i.e basement window) and you can have a safe haven for weeks if not longer.

In two weeks I will be homeless. I spent my last money on a nice tent, sleeping bag, backpack and whatnot. Buy a nice one-man tent and you can sleep just about anywhere.

if you have a car, it's easy to sleep in the car once you find several spots and rotate..

if you have camping gear, plenty of places to camp for the night,

i was homeless for 3 months (with a dodge colt, hard to sleep in it but its doable.)

got a job, saved money, weekdays i slept in the car in the town in different spots went to work.

on weekends, camped out on the beach and in the woods...

had a box of books in the trunk..

very weird and good and trying time in my life.

wouldn't trade it for the world in a weird sort of way..

that's the worst they can do to me.

i could live in a beat up old van for years going up and down the coast and be happy if i had too.

Go to a church! That's what they're there for! They should not only give you a place to sleep but money, job opportunities, and possibly teach you something!

Just be careful of some other homeless people. They have thier own societal structures and hierarchies. I've seen much homeless on homeless crime.

In the old days that was true. No longer true in many places. Seems some our militarized polizei are prowling farther and farther afield looking for people to harass.

At one time, I lived in a van for quite a while. Park on different streets after dark and make sure you're quiet and have no internal lights showing. Watch your DC powered TV with earphones and put your phone on vibrate only. NEVER, ever bother anyone at any time.

can you buy a cheap RV? then you have a home no matter where you go. or just a van. put a mattress in it and a porta potty. you can stay in walmart parking lots for free. plus you can travel to where the jobs are. you can even work in camp grounds and stay for free.

You will no doubt become instantly eligible for EBT food stamps, as well as a free monthly bus pass. You may also find yourself the owner of a new, free cell phone...but if not, be sure to come on out to the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia and free things will be much easier to obtain...

You may want to go get a postal mailbox while you still have an address...they make you go through all sorts of red tape to get one, and you MUST provide them with a physical address where you actually LIVE. If you have a mailbox address, you can at least put that on any applications. You may also want to update your drivers license while you are still established.

Have you tried an urgent appeal on Craigslist, telling of your situation and your willingness to work if only someone could offer a job?

Call around to all the churches and benevolent organizations in your area and find out when they hand out the groceries.

Sorry it has come to this point, for you and for so many others!... See if you can delay for even a couple of weeks more, and set yourself up as much as possible ahead of time.

Remember that the library has many free resources, including the internet.

What happened?

The first thing I'd do if I were you, smear mud all over your nice stuff! There are a lot of homeless that won't give one rats ass about you if you hit the streets with a lot of nice shiny stuff and try to seperate yourself from "them". If you're on the street you're one of them and if you think otherwise they will let you know by beating you up and robbing you! Not that everyones like that but it only takes one or two! Sorry for your predicament, Peace and love to you. When in Rome etc. Get your stuff dirty and remember they had a life before the street to!

they have patrolling guards in the cemeteries here in the states...i've spent a few nights with girfriends in the cemetery...not as private as you'd think..

can't even have sex in the grass properly...without worrying about the guards patrolling..

I really can't understand why you would become homeless. Are you too proud to take a job at McDonalds or just a fast food joint or doing some other shitty job?

It still pays. Get a job and work and find something affordable on that income.

If your a single guy and have no medical conditions you really have no excuse.

This is what I would do. Go to a hospital in a big city.

Go in the daytime and go to the floors and look around. Find an older person who has no flowers etc. Go in and talk to them. Ask them how they are feeling etc.

Remember their name, room number and Dr.'s name. Write it down if you have to.That info is usually on the outside of the door. Now when nightfall comes around, go to the security desk and tell them you are staying the night. They will give you a pass and no one will be the wiser. Find a deserted place in the hospital and go to sleep. You will be safe. You can also find an empty room and take a shower if you need to. You can easily stay there about a week before people start to wonder.

Churches used to provide methods for homeless. Many societies of older times had areas that also allowed homeless a place to stay, barns, sheds, shacks. Sadly almost all have been tossed by the way side in our attempts to be more civilized we lost our civilized ways.
Man sadly will feed another country, yet push his own needy out the door. We are truly seeing bad times and sad not many will see how bad unless it happens to them.
I feel for you OP, it is sad. You can make it if you can get away from the cities and hit the woods. Much to be said for that lost lifestyle. It too is not easy. Luck on the choices you make given the available situation.

Do not expect anyone to help, they probably wont. Man is truly a selfish & materialistic animal that seems to be cold hearted as a general rule.
