THE APPEAL OF LIGHT OVER DARK

The ocean on a moonless night has an enticing beauty of it‘s own. White waves starkly contrast against the inky depths, their power audibly dominating the other four senses. The horizon is non-existent as dark sky and inky water meld together in the distance. The imagination tangles with the comprehension of the menacing abyss that conceals the lurking sinister forms below the surface threatening to consume. The black expanse resonates bass notes within the soul.

Then dawn breaks, the gloomy veil is lifted, and warm light washes over the fluid landscape turning what was once mysterious into shimmering brilliance of colors. The ocean, once dark and flat, is now luminous and sparkling as the translucent greens and blues replace the abyss. The light reveals the perfect ‘plumb line’ of the horizon as the darker blues of the sea are echoed in the lighter hue of the sky. White birds peacefully glide their way across the line that separates upper and lower realms. Billowing white clouds mimic the pure brilliance of waves that rush towards shore meeting the fluid sand flowing in submission to the powerful influence.

While standing in the surf your soul is invigorated by the physical pounding created by this power of nature. Your heart is filled with joy and wondrous awe as white foam skims around your body and sapphire-like streamers of light dance vertically through the clear shallows. Palm trees reach up with green fronds to meet the sky. Salty air tickles the interior of the nose while briny seawater stings the lips and tongue and chills the skin, alluding to it’s distant depths. The eyes are filled with a glorious palate of colors and shapes. All senses are heightened and engaged. Nothing is hidden and everything cries out with the ‘song of life’. This is creation at it’s best and is why ’Paradise’ is it’s given name . . . and all because of the presence of light.

Darkness has it’s place . . .without it we would not appreciate the illuminating power in it’s alter ego. Darkness also provides the healing properties a quieted landscape for which the eyes and mind can rest from visual stimulants. If during sleep we find our minds haunted by frightening dreams it is the comforting presence of dawn that assuages the soul, adding a truer perspective of reality. Many a dark monster laden corner, in the light of day, has taken on the innocent form of a clothing laden chair.

Darkness indeed has it’s own enticing mysterious deep beauty, but a beauty that is schematically limited . . .limited by the mere fact that it does not reveal all that IS. Only light can change an abyss into a gleaming jewel. Only light can unveil what tries to remain hidden. Only Light can illuminate what lurks beneath. Only light can transform a dark palate into brilliance of colors. Only light can reveal the plumb line of the horizon during the hope of a new dawn.
