The original marriage licenses were so slaves could be married to free men.

U.S.citizenship (2nd class) was created on July 16th, 1868 for slaves only!
(what class of citizen existed from 1776 to 1868?)

The first marriage licenses were issued so slave citizens (U.S. citizens) could marry first class (state) citizens (free men) who didn't need the license. (government was their servant...not their master)

The first licenses in my home state (from 1868 to 1900) actually said sovereign and slave for the signatures..

this was changed to groom and bride.


Do you guys realize there was no formal "federal government" from 1776 to 1781, until the Articles of the Confederation was ratified by the people? ALL were State Citizens?
