lil*miss (OP) User ID: 932709 Canada 04/07/2010 01:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | According to the report, Solar Cycle 24 will peak in May 2013 with a sunspot count well below average. “If our prediction is correct, Solar Cycle 24 will have a peak sunspot number of 90, the lowest of any cycle since 1928 when Solar Cycle 16 peaked at 78,” says panel chairman Doug Biesecker of the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center. This does not mean that we won't feel the results of renewed solar storm activity here on Earth. Quoting: LouisWinthorpeIII“Even a below-average cycle is capable of producing severe space weather,” points out Biesecker. “The great geomagnetic storm of 1859, for instance, occurred during a solar cycle of about the same size we’re predicting for 2013.” A recent report by the National Academy of Sciences found that if a storm similar to the 1859 disturbance—known as the “Carrington Event” after astronomer Richard Carrington who observed the associated solar flare—occurred today, it could cause $1 to 2 trillion in damages to society's high-tech infrastructure and require four to ten years for complete recovery. Reportedly, the 1859 storm electrified transmission cables, set fires in telegraph offices, and produced Northern Lights so bright that people could read newspapers by their glow. I've been reading about that... they pulled the batteries out of telegraph offices, and the cables were so electrified they could continue to operate without their main power source.... There is no doubt it'd blow our entire power grid up. And the worst part, is that most of our power grid ancient, some of it even going back to 1860 (on how it works, and where it goes etc... hell we still have a STEAM network in NYC!).... And there is no way we have the equipment on hand to repair replace... And we sure as hell don't have it to rebuild. It could herald another dark age. And that'd be some real doom!!!! Yes, this is a real problem, and a power failure and an ice age together would be doom of unforeseeable proportions. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 936247 United States 04/07/2010 01:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Water vapor constitutes Earth's most significant greenhouse gas, accounting for about 95% of Earth's greenhouse effect (5). Interestingly, many "facts and figures' regarding global warming completely ignore the powerful effects of water vapor in the greenhouse system, carelessly (perhaps, deliberately) overstating human impacts as much as 20-fold. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 936429Water vapor is 99.999% of natural origin. Other atmospheric greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), and miscellaneous other gases (CFC's, etc.), are also mostly of natural origin (except for the latter, which is mostly anthropogenic). Which is exactly why I think contrails are the culprit for the rapid change we have had lately. You know all of those artificial clouds in the sky have to have some kind of effect. |
