April 8 (Bloomberg) — More Americans unexpectedly filed claims for jobless benefits last week, a jump that may in part reflect difficulty in seasonally adjusting the data ahead of the Easter holiday.

Initial jobless applications increased by 18,000 to 460,000 in the week ended April 3, Labor Department figures showed today in Washington. The week leading up to Easter and the two weeks that follow are traditionally a volatile time for claims, a Labor Department analyst said, making it difficult to discern the underlying trend in applications.

The cut off date for continued claims was April 4th. Yes, Easter Sunday. I know this because I was unemployed as of ysterday. I was told to call on the 5th to extend my benefits. I was told by the EDD personel, that the cut off to extend was April 4th. I cannot file an extension. I said how do they make the date April 4th when they know the calendar year in January, and knew it would fall on a Sunday when EDD is closed. I was told to check their website regularly for updates as congress is in recess over the extension date untill April 12th. Lucky for me I got a job yesterday. I'm on my last EDD check !

Anyway. I think a lot of people are going to be SOL. But for some the extension (and there will be an extension when congress reconveins on the 12th ) will pay off. The Senate has approved it, so Congress just needs to give the a-ok !

Oh, and as far as the unemployment rate holding steady at 9.7 %. The California EDD site has it holding steady at
12.5%. Who are you going to believe ?
