Maguyver User ID: 808852 United States 04/21/2010 11:32 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Stay away from anything that says 'China' on it. Ge the best steel you can afford. AUS8 is likely the top of your price range, but look a bit and you'll find one. 420 stainless is to soft. Buck and Case make some blades in your price range, though the Case will likely be a bit higher. If you can find CRKT in that price range; get it. There are MANY others, but your budget is limiting. Good steel isn't cheap. Don't forget a good sharpening stone and oil. Bladeforums is a wealth of info. Adversity is inevitable, misery is optional. Do or do not. There is no try. Hammer, skull crusher, insulated grip for cutting power lines, designed by military. A Navy SEAL sniper used this knife to make a hole through a concrete wall and take a shot. I recommend a good tactical folder, a Swiss Army knife, a multi-tool, and a fixed blade all be carried for survival. I always carry my tactical folder and Swiss Army knife as well as a Ronson Butane lighter and a 20' of parachord. Of course, I have lived in a rural environment most of my life and not having a couple of knives is dumb. One is none... |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 945031 United States 04/21/2010 11:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I am getting my SHTF preps in order and I want to get a good survival knife. I am looking for a fixed blade with a full tang and something that is versatile. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 665901Any decent ones at Walmart or Sports Authority or Dicks's sporting goods that you can recommend? I'm Looking to spend under $50. I'm no Crocodile Dundee, just want something that will come in handy. Chain stores? No. Stay far away from what is normally considered a "survival knife." These are often shitty blades that are too big for there own good. If your speaking versatile, keep in mind that if you are looking for a knife that can be a knife, and chop wood, then you are not going to find it for under $50. If this is what you want, I recommend the Ontario 12" cutlass machete. Since you probably don't know much about edged tools, I'd recommend something simple and to the point: Try the Cold Steel Bushman. It costs about $30 on Amazon, and is a good all around blade. It is made of one solid piece of high carbon (the best) steel, and the handle is hollow so that you can simply pop in a sapling, broom stick, or any straight shaft to make a fully functioning spear. Very handy as a quick defense/offense weapon. If you HAVE to go to wally world and can't buy online, you could always pick up the Buck 119 special for about $40. Better still, get to an Ace Hardware or find a farm store and get an Old Hickory butcher knife. They cost about 5 dollars, and are made of excellent carbon steel heat treated to a perfect degree for easy sharpening and edge retention. These are the types of blades our forefathers pioneered these lands with hundreds of years ago, so they have stood the test of time for their usefulness and quality. |

Major League Infidel User ID: 677643 United States 04/21/2010 02:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A lot of good suggestions have been made on this thread and in that vein I would like to make one more suggestion, Fehrman Knives. If you’re going to rely on a knife for a survival/hard use type situation you may wish to consider spending a little more for the added piece of mind. Fehrman uses great steel with excellent heat treat and are tough beyond comprehension in my humble experience, and guaranteed for life. [link to store.fehrmanknives.com] This model is very competitively priced, in 0-1 tool steel, and appears to be currently on sale. [link to store.fehrmanknives.com] This model is a little small but more inline with your price range. Of course this is simply my opinion, I am in no way affiliated with Fehrman just a satisfied user.
