HMMMM Will oil drilling cause a planet cave-in?
Makes you wonder - just a bit - about the amount gushing out and what is filling the void. The article talks about how Canada has a practice of replacing the oil with C02 -

Will oil drilling cause a planet cave-in?

Caving in? Please, let's not panic. The fundamentals of our planet are strong. Besides, we're talking about a liquid here, and it's pretty far down. Wholesale removal of solids such as coal or salt close to the surface, now ... no question that can lead to exciting times in the immediate vicinity. Still, even if it's oil at the end of a really long straw, suck out a trillion barrels (roughly what the Exxons of the world have pumped up to date) and you're going to see an impact. I don't say it ranks with the collapse of the world financial system, but 100-plus years of serious petroleum extraction have caused the earth to appreciably shrivel up...

IF 1 Barrel of Oil = Appx 6 cubic feet then
5000 Barrels = 30,000 cubic feet

Right?

I have been wondering about this for some time OP! Obviously it is there for a reason, and NOT the one we are currently depleting it for. I am no expert, but I do know what happens to a ball if you take some of the insides out.

I do have this feeling that the oil spill is Mother Nature's way of telling us we have gone too far.

The article I was reading earlier on GLP said that the oil rig was destroyed because the oil they tapped was under so much pressure it blew all their controls.

Sounds like we hit a major artery to me. This wound may well start a cascade of earth related issues.

The release of this pressure certainly must have an impact on the surrounding area -

Re: HMMMM Will oil drilling cause a planet cave-in?
If the well was near the surface of the ground part, yes a cave-in is likely. It would result in a collapse of the 'well' part and the appearance of a sinkhole on the surface. We have seen this with mines around the world.

However this well is so deep that a cave-in would not result in a sink hole. The ground, rocks, soils and ground water all combined work sort of like a fluid, while at the 'well' there is a definite 'cave in' back tracking to the surface one would see, over a long period of time, ground contraction/sinking.

find a sinkhole, add it to this thread, please.
