GET YOUR HANDS ON A WOOD BURNING STOVE WHILE WE ARE IN THE OFF SEASON AND OIL HASNT ROCKETED YET
Last year I bought two wood stoves, both good old steel ones from estate sales and it is the best thing I ever did.

With one on the top and bottom floor, we used our oil furnace very little last year.

If you have a fireplace, buy a wood stove fire place insert now. Instead of sending all of your heat up the chimney, it will keep your house toasty.

I have always had one at my hunting cabin and in 10 below zero, guys were sweating and opening windows, that how much heat they throw.

You are allowed to take wood off state land for free as long as it is a dead fall, you cant cut trees down. Talk to your local Department of Conservation guy or ranger and just let him know what you are doing in advance and ask if it is ok. If you talk nice to the guy, claim poverty and just tell him you want to collect wood from dead falls, he wont give you a problem.

I say to buy a wood stove in the off season because when oil shoots back up you best believe prices of wood stoves will double or triple.

If you go to an estate sale try to look for a steel box wood stove not cast iron. Cast iron can crack and it is hard to weld.

If you see a wood stove with the name "Nashua" on it at a tag sale, grab it, they are not in business anymore. The steel they used was twice as thick as the steel on a brand new wood stove and once it gets hot, it stays hot just like a radiator.

This is the exact stoves I have, dont worry about it if you think they look old and ugly. You sand them with fine sandpaper for metal and then you spray them with Rustoleum HIGH HEAT (ONLY HIGH HEAT PAINT!!!!!!!) any color you want and they look brand new.

Hubby wants to install a cornburner. Problem is, we don't have a chimney anymore. We had it removed because it was literally falling apart, taken all the way down to the basement.

Collect any wood you can for cooking now. Cooking fuel will be like GOLD after about another month.

Re: GET YOUR HANDS ON A WOOD BURNING STOVE WHILE WE ARE IN THE OFF SEASON AND OIL HASNT ROCKETED YET
I heated with wood when I lived in Idaho primarily. I still do when I am up at my cabin in the fall and winter. Like you said a good wood stove will drive you out of the house, if you get it stoked well.

This might be a neccesity soon. For and average house about 1500, sq ft. it takes from 1 1/2 to 3 cords per winter, depending how well insulated your house is. A cord is 4 feetx4feetx8feet.

Very Good advice, also might look at barrel stove kits. Just having one might really make a difference.

Buy a corn-stove furance and buy hard corn and quit polluting. And it costs about a third and corn is renewable.

About a third compared to natural gas I think for the heat in winter time.

Afterall, if this Congress raises prices like they say, corn will even cost cheaper, and grain bins are easier to find then trees that are down. And easier to add to the furance.

Unless you buy a big corn-stove furance, all you need for a small one is a l-shaped vent out the side or out the roof straight and I think 3" pipe.

I don't know for the bigger ones that go in a basement, but chimany is needed.
Not sure though.

So is wood and wood is free if you live in the woods.
Every year a storms will knock down a few big tress on or near my land.
I cut em up and let them season for a year. 3 good sized trees will yield about 4 cords. Since I got a free log splitter 3 years ago it only takes me a few days to re-cut to size and split a winters worht.

People in cities do not live in forests, but buying corn is not all that expensive and cleaner to burn. No creasote to clean out, that much as a wood burning stove. Maintainance cost may be cheaper, although I am not sure.

But in the city, they probably would not allow the pollution out of a wood-buring stove.

and LEARN HOW TO DIG AN OUTHOUSE

here: [link to www.ehow.com]

but remember: Never dig alone. A hole as deep as that required for an outhouse could cave in, causing suffocation and death.
