There are plans to evacuate people with respiratory problems, especially those among the retired senior population along the west coast of Florida, before officials begin burning surface oil as it begins to near the coastline.

for some reason this rings true - tptb want all the old ones gone. just like katrina, they wanted all the poor blacks gone..... bastards.

I now believe satan is in control, and I say to you satan "go back to f%#@cking hell" ...

BP is a british corporation, the United States nationalizing it would be upsetting to the British, I'm sure. Is Dick Cheney 'putin' the meat to BP?...you betcha!
This is a catastrophic disaster for BP, it's a drop of oil in a mudpuddle in the gulf. Biological and enviromental factors will break the oil down, at first into a tar and eventually into benign organic molecules. The worst thing about oil is the volatiles, which evaporate away

The US government cannot nationalize a foreign company. BP is British-owned.

I already brought that up and was called an idiot. We could seize their American assets and holdings as compensation. Either way, BP is in serious trouble and Dick Cheney is sitting back raking in the dough. The cementing operation is what caused the well to blow out00000000000000

Time to cut through the bullshit here...been in this business for 20 years, oil spills, leaks and seeps all the time, it's nothing new. We dont know the flow rate so anything is speculation at this point. I think its mostly gas coming out of the well and the PR problem is that methane is a greenhouse gas.The truth is , there is no major slick in the gulf or someone would have photos of fouled animals in the media, theyre all over this debacle.

Its a goddamned gas well and it blew out, theyre going to lose the whole deposit because they cannot tap what is left of the wellhead. Its that simple. They stopped near the top of the oil deposit, which rest directly under liquid methane under pressure. It's cavitating and there isnt alot of oil coming out of the well. Unless you believe what youve been told.

I don't know why this story keeps being posted ...

But what they could try is to make a very strong folding-umbrella type device, fold it up, push it down the relief well all the way to the reservoir point-first but the the "handle" still in the hole, then let it open up. It should spread out and cover the hole, blocking most of the flow.

Then pour lots of stuff down there and cement it, and hope the umbrella holds until the cement sets.

Because to do that...they would need to fully open the well head. There is 6 stories of massive machinery bolted to the throat of the well right now...with various obstructions train wrecked inside it....I read somewhere that if this giant assembly (the BOP) is fully removed than the wells flow could increase to 10x or more what it is now....so that's a risky move.....it might also more or less cause the whole well sleeve, concrete head and the whole well assembly to just be ripped apart...then the huge flow of oil and gas would just tear open the hole more and more...worse and worse....until it truly is a raging volcano....and that may happen anyway if they cannot stop thing fairly soon....it's destroying and eating itself as we speak...there are abrasives in the oil and gas under tremendous pressure rushing out...it's like the Colorado river carving a Grand Canyon...only at high speed......
 Quoting: SHR

Good points about the well head.

But I did say to push it down the relief well. It seems they're drilling the relief well(s) to intercept the original hole relatively close to the bottom (reservoir) end. So I would push the umbrella down the relief hole, then into the last part of the original hole and into the reservoir, bypassing the wellhead entirely.

BTW, it is standard operating procedure in the oil industry to bleed off gas pressure in wells where oil is the target. This is to reduce pressures and make oil recovery safer and easier.
