They aren't trying to plug the well...just the shut-off valve that they couldn't get to shut-off. Even if it succeeds, the well could still blow-out in another place, I think. Maybe they think if they can partially plug it the crystals will form and plug the rest?

it's already doing at least that amount , this is to cover their ass as much as they can. I would be willing to bet it is even doing more than what they said it would.
