This is far, FAR more than 5000 barrels a day

They aren't trying to cover, cap it, stop it or anything like that with these "Domes"...all these do is suck up the oils after it blows out...it's ALL these things CAN do...

and so far they aren't even doing that...

These things are an exercise to appease the public...nothing more...they do not, can not and never were meant to address the real problem.

I haven't been following this too much...too fucking depressing...but wasn't this one of the biggest resevoirs they ever found?

My ideas is:

Take a heavy piece of alloy or rock and sharpen it at the point. Kind of like a wide plumb-bob. Attach wide fins with propellers to it which will be attached by leads to ships used to lower it in a coordinated effort. It will lodge itself in the hole. That's if it was a hole on the bottom.

But because its a pipe on its side maybe a giant slab will work better. A slab of something really heavy. take into account the contour of the bottom it will be resting on. Use guidelines from several ships-or propellers to steer it down, but let its weight guide it.

The Tiber oilfield is a deepwater offshore oilfield in the Gulf of Mexico, discovered by BP in September 2009. Described as a "giant" find,[2] it is estimated to contain 4 to 6 billion barrels (640×10^6 to 950×10^6 m3) of oil in place[3], although BP states it is too early to be sure of the size[2] - a "huge" field is usually considered to contain 250 million barrels (40×10^6 m3). Lack of boom to contain oil spill worries Mississippi Delta

Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser says there's not enough oil boom in the world to adequately protect his ecologically diverse and fragile jurisdiction at the mouth of the Mississippi River from the oil spill.

He's probably right.

The massive Mississippi Delta — consisting of bayous, estuaries, saltwater lakes, bays and barrier islands — has hundreds of miles of shoreline. Yet there's only about 100 miles of boom on hand to protect the entire Gulf Coast from oil leaking from the well site where the Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20.

Boom is a ribbon of PVC fabric attached to flotation foam. When anchored to the ocean bottom in chains off the coast, it acts like a curtain — blocking oil from reaching shore.

Even counting the miles of existing boom being sent to the region from around the world, and the miles of new boom being produced each day by a handful of manufacturers, it will be weeks before the Gulf Coast region has enough boom to provide the full protection local leaders say they need now.

The target zone for the oil spill is about 500 miles wide, as the crow flies, from East Texas to Panama City, Fla. But because of the gnarly Gulf coastline, the region could use as much as 2,000 miles of boom to lay the double layer of protection that officials such as Nungesser want.

"This is not a high-volume business in the sense that we're consistently making product the way GM and Ford would," says Omid Javadi, project manager at Vancouver-based Versatech, one of a handful of North American companies that make marine containment booms. "Typically we build to order," Javadi says. But this time, "People are buying as fast as we can make it."

Versatech has added a second shift and is installing new machinery to increase its output. It's also gearing up for a third shift to meet the urgent demand.

Still, businesses can't respond fast enough to soothe concerns of local officials worried about what the oil will do once hurricane season arrives next month.

Local, state and federal officials along the Gulf Coast now are looking at alternatives for protecting the land. One idea is to use dredges to build an 80-mile-long barrier island off Plaquemines Parish to protect the Mississippi River Delta. Boom then could be concentrated at the mouth of the river and at bays. Nungesser says the plan would cost $250 million and, if approved, would have to be paid for by British Petroleum. Dredging likely couldn't begin for 10 days.

In Lafourche Parish, spokesman Brennan Matherne says the National Guard is using sandbags to close gaps in the area's natural barrier islands. "It's a whole lot easier to clean up the oil once it gets into the sand on an island than it is to clean up our marshes."

So what happens during a hurricane in that area?
