How can an American leave the US, when an American is not part of the US ? You are either an American or a US citizen but you cant be both. I think what 60774 was getting at is that those people who think of themselves as "Americans" have a more global perspective - citizens of the world community.

"US citizens" have a narrower vision of themselves and, perhaps, more a sense of "us" against "them".

i thought i read on one of the earlier pages that Gaiaman actually came from Indonesia (which used to be the Dutch East Indies).
