friend got a company site and person that used to run it died on cancer
no password or known domain is left
what can he do to restore control of the site??
or at least get adress of the hosting company to call them for password as it was registered on institusion.

Above all!!! Do not tell them that he died!!!! That will reallllllly get you locked out!

If you do not know the domain name its pointless.

Does he have a copy of the website?

If so you can register a domain, get some hosting and upload the website.

hmmm no copy but site is pretty simple as it's mainly info site
sad thing is the adress was quite catchy for that company

do a whois lookup for that domain..will tell you the name of that company

Then you can get some help as they want paid.

Give us the domain name...

With that, we'll know the name servers which will lead us to whoever is hosting it. We can also do a whois on the IP space and trace the host back that way as well.

Nameservers may not necessarily point you to the webhost. Here's the sure fire way.

Run a dig on the domain name, take the IP address it resolves to, and run a whois on the IP space. That will tell you where the domain is hosted.

It's public information anyhow, if you want help a domain name is the minimum requirement. I guess you're just looking to vent, have a good day.
