I got a job on a long line fishing boat baiting hooks.

I was amazed after only 6 mths I got my masters.

Now I'm a Master baiter.

Hey Rken...Capt. Mike here....long time.

I've been giving some thought to going back to school. But I've been thinking that one might be better off taking a bunch of FREE online courses that MIT is offering online and just keep good records as to what courses were taken and test/exam scores.

I'm thinking that one might be better off without the 'paper' from a place like Phoenix and instead, have a list of MIT courses that were taken successfully online for free. Thing is, with online video lectures and the same reading material as 'regular' universities, one could really get a good education without the travel and attendance issues.

Are you still in Thailand?...when do you go to Hawaii?

it is supposed to be a legit diploma; it is an online deg. I got an MBA. I went to apply for a job at a bank as a financial officer. They asked me for a copy of my degree. When I presented it to the interviewer, the bitch laughed and said this diploma is a joke. Wtf? I spent tons of cash getting this on-line degree. How is it a joke? I dont get it.

If the University of phoenix is accredited, it should be good to go.

Depends on the accrediting agency; some are more highly regarded than others. Some are not regarded at all.

I work with a girl who is doing the same thing. I know if I try to tell her it is a scam, she will never believe me and would probably never speak to me again. It breaks my heart to see her paying all that money and studying so diligently.

Just because it's accredited doesn't mean that anyone has to take it seriously.

The WNBA is a legit basketball league, but who really cares?

That's your University of Phoenix diploma... the WNBA.

Teaching there made me feel dirty. Every class scraped off bits of my soul. UOP is a complete joke filled with cheating students and greedy, lazy faculty who don't give a damn about honor or education, only shoving the students through to the next class. Plagiarism there is expected and in some ways encouraged. Its all about the money, baby. I'm really surprised they held on to accreditation as long as they did. You paid for a pretty piece of paper.

that is some really fucking up shit! this country! damn this country! they tell you to get an education. They accredit these kinds of institutions giving you the impression they're legit. But yet! they will fuckin reject it!! damn this country!!!!!!!!!!

that is the thing, it is accredited. So why the hell did she laugh and ridicule my diploma?

Because it's online. You didn't physically attend a real college and probably didn't put in the amount of time people would for the degree. Online degrees can be earned in months, maybe even weeks compared to 4 years at a college. Some employers will look beyond the paper because they want someone who put the time into it.
It sucks, especially if you spent money on it, but it's true.

Schools have reputations, just like people.

A "degree" itself means nothing in the "real" world, it is all about the the rest of the stuff surrounding it.

How hard does the school pre-screen it's students?

With Harvard or Warton or Stanford MBA's ANY graduate, or even drop out, is automatically assumed to be very very bright separate and apart from the degree.

How hard is the program once one gets in?

Again Harvard, Warton, or Stanford are again the standard that everybody else is compared to. (second tier would be mostly midwest schools since they have the best success in the real world at producing Fortune 1000 CEO's, CFO's, COO's ... even better than the top tier: Michigan, OSU, U of Ill, Chicago, Northwestern, U. of Wisc., Minn. etc.)

If you just need a "check the box" degree to get a step pay raise in a large bueracratic organization then "any" legit degree will accomplish that.

If you are looking for a REAL management job ... every employer is going to gravitate towards the degrees from programs that are nationally recognized as being excellent, degrees from either the top tier or the second tier.

For just pure "learning" if you don't have much money the MIT stuff is the "real deal".

Sure no degree ... but you are actually going to learn more if you are dilligent ... than someone getting ANY degree mill degree and actually more than most 3rd tier schools.

What you will miss, which is actually BIG, is the personal interaction with the faculty and other students, where much of the "real" learning that applies the book theories to the real world occures.

Maybe someday MIT will even allow some sort of MIT "Lite" degree based upon their FREE on line courses.

Cheer up and phone an attorney. I've seen that U of P campus personally, in Phoenix. About 70% of their students get financial aid from the Dept. of Ed so it's definitely a legit and vetted school. It IS expensive, more than ASU, but it's easier to get into. Tell the retard that laughed at your degree to meet you in court. She may get fired over that. Think of all the 'minorities' who are going to schools like U of Phoenix, all the people out in the country - reservations - who are being discriminated against. That's simply illegal. I mean it. Phone a lawyer right now and sue.

Re: Do you believe this crap?!?! I got my masters from the University of Phoenix and...
I just do not understand people who go after an MBA and do not operate like a business person with a bachelor's degree. First of all, not all MBA are equal. Top schools are top schools for a reason. Next tier is comprised of full-time education. No matter what part-time or Executive program one attends, it is not viewed the same as a full-time program as the students are not required to do the same level of research, writing and much more. Then there are the on-line programs. These are the easy way and not the best way.

What every prospective MBA student should think about is how the market works. Which school(s) provide the EDUCATION and the DIPLOMA needed as well as the reputation required to delver on career desires and expectations?

Step 1, Take the time to consider two other and very visible factors. Review the Faculty profiles. Did they go to the premier business schools? DId they attain the appropriate real world positions and promotion path? Do they maintain the right contacts in the marketplace and with their former employers? Are they engaged as a consultant to the right companies?

Step 2, Contact companies and management in those companies that hire the positions the prospective student hopes to attain upon graduation. It also helps them to ascertain the best match between school, career and company.

Step 3, Analyze your data and invest in the education that will get you to the desired goal.

Re: Do you believe this crap?!?! I got my masters from the University of Phoenix and...
No one should like or approve of discrimination. However, preferring one academic program over another as basis for hiring or promotion is legal and legitimate. Many will not hire a fellow minority because they are minority unless I have to meet some quota which is BS. The idea was to promote equality not perpetuate inequality. I subscribe to this. Also, when it comes to being qualified, we all want the best. Would you rather go to a Dr who went to Harvard and is a noted leader in the field or someone with lesser pedigree? Same goes with business. The best MBA talent typically comes from the respected programs. Phoenix and other on-line programs are legal and legit, just not on par with the respected programs whether you look at them academically or in terms of the work performance by their graduates in companies I worked. I am referring to the overall set. Some exceptions were noted here which is similar to some graduates of ASU being superior to an IVY grad. This was the exception!

Re F'ing up the country is the allocation of accreditation...BS. In this country we afford opportunity to everyone. In many cases the criteria must be provided so that equality can be measured. JUst because a school is accredited doesn't mean it is on par with others or even worthy. Ever hear of a Dr not being good or any one else receiving training, graduating and being unable to perform? The fault lies with the student in their choice to attend and failing to do due diligence. Ignorance is not bliss. Take responsibility for your actions and inaction. The buck rests with the individual in terms of education.

Did you do any due diligence before you enrolled? For example, was Phoenix on par with other programs from the employers perspective? Quite frankly, it is not the equivalent of ASU or most any other traditional university. As a former Sr. executive, I can tell you the respected programs are respected for a reason. Full-time is more respected than part-time or executive programs simple because the depth and breadth of work is significantly more rigorous. On-line and for-profit MBAs garner little respect for three reasons. The level of work/education is not much more than and often less than most undergraduate programs. The majority of faculty are not PhDs, nor renowned for their academic, research or business world accomplishments. Finally, the vast majority of student are not he most academically gifted. What I mean by this is the entry std at Harvard or most any traditional MBA program is significantly more stringent, and thus, only the better academic and professionals gain entry. Better students are exposed to better educators and are provided more depth and breadth.

The University of Phoenix is a diploma mill. The business model is to get as much federal student loan money as possible. Whatever education you get is incidental and is just a cost to be contained.

Ask yourself this: How many ads for UofP have you seen? Thousands?

How many ads for a Harvard MBA have you seen?

Re: Do you believe this crap?!?! I got my masters from the University of Phoenix and...
I received my BFA back in 1975 from a local, well-respected state university, and in the decades since that momentous day I have NEVER needed to wave it in front of someone to "prove" my intelligence. The woman the OP encountered simply has a very skewed [and commonly-shared perception] of what actually constitutes an "education".

By definition, education is the acquisition of knowledge through a strengthening of the body and mind... from whatever source. True knowledge does not [and never has] required a heavy piece of paper to document individual intellect; rather, it is an artificial standard by which the corporate, judicial, political, medical and educational structures use to measure "worthy" candidates for inclusion. Proof? If this cherished practice had any genuine merit, then why are there thousands of PHD's seeking employment today? An old adage suggests that the best cream always rises to the top of the milk - but not so in the actual business world. People always have -and always will- use subjective reasoning when hiring an individual and a degree only makes it easier for them to justify their decisions. It's a bit of a CYA process: if a degreed employee fails spectacularly, he "went to a crummy school or was a "C-average" student"; if a non-degreed person fails... "well, you get what you pay for, right?"

People seem to forget who accredited the ORIGINAL professors: names such as Socrates, Aristotle and Plato. Socrates claimed never to have accepted payment for teaching as he felt knowledge should be shared freely. His avowed profession? A stonemason... like his Father, Sophroniscus. This makes the condemnation [and ultimate execution] of Socrates even more dynamic: his dramatic decline began when his friend Chaerephon asked the Oracle of Delphi [itelf a false-God] if there was any man wiser than Socrates. The Oracle said, "NO!" Socrates laughed at the absurdity of this lofty proclamation.

You see, Socrates knew [even then] that those men who claim to be the most wise were really nothing of the kind and merely poseurs. He then proved his case by questioning the leading minds of Athens and allowed them to publicly prove their own ignorance. These powerful people then turned upon Socrates, accused him of corrupting youth Athenean minds, and the result was a cup of Hemlock and swift death. LESSON TO REMEMBER: powerful people do NOT like to be reminded of how insignificant they truly are! The irony in all this is that the Oracle was actually correct: Socrates WAS more intelligent by realising his own limitations and not pretending to be something he wasn't.

And: although no one ever accredited Socrates or handed him an ancient form of sheepskin [after all: the Oracle said no one was qualified to do so!] his innate wisdom, intellect and knowledge of all around him survives to this day and he is still held as the standard by which truer ethics are judged.

My point of all this? TRUE wisdom cannot be measured. Not by any test, or formal written or oral dissertation. This is why you may sometimes hear of the wisest words springing from a man with no formal education or from the mouth of a small child.

So, my advice to our disheartened OP is to consider his diploma just another lesson learned and understand that he is perhaps a great deal more intelligent than that scrap of paper could ever prove.
